DALLAS - The Big 12 Conference takes great pleasure in honoring 17 student-athletes who have been named to the 2001 Wrestling Academic All-Big 12 Team, the conference announced Monday.
Among the 17 honored is Oklahoma sophomore Tony Moore who was nominated with a 4.0 grade point average.
Two Sooners - Witt Durden (So., 133 pounds) and Tony Moore (Fr.-RS, 157) - were named to the first team while Robbie Waller (So., 165) garnered second-team honors. Durden is currently ranked as high as No. 12 nationally and has compiled a 25-14 record. He also started in all 24 of OU's duals. Tony Moore was thrust into action after a series of injures at 157 pounds and was the only Big 12 wrestler nominated with a 4.0 GPA. Waller has compiled a 28-4 record, has won five-straight matches and is ranked as high as third.
Many of these student-athletes will participate in the fifth Big 12 Wrestling Championship Friday and Saturday, March 2-3, in Stillwater, Okla. Oklahoma State is defending Big 12 champion and the Cowboys have won three of the first four league wrestling crowns. Oklahoma captured the 1999 title.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the wrestling academic all-league squad consisted of seven combined first-team members with 10 on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.2 or better grade-point average, while second team are those who have a 3.0 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshman and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
