NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma men's basketball senior guard Nolan Johnson averaged 19.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals in wins over Texas Tech (80-72) and Texas (75-54) last week and was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference office announced today.
Johnson, who hails from Brooklyn, N.Y., made 12-of-28 field goal attempts on the week and also went 14-for-16 from the free throw line (.875).
In the home win against Texas Tech, Johnson recorded 15 points, seven rebounds and a game-high three steals. Versus the Longhorns on Saturday, he registered a career-high 23 points on 8-for-15 shooting and a game-high nine boards as the Sooners posted their most impressive win of the season. He was 7-for-8 at the free throw line in both contests.
Johnson, who has scored in double figures in six straight games, now ranks second on the squad in scoring (12.7 ppg) and third in rebounding (4.6 rpg). He is averaging 7.1 rebounds during OU's seven-game winning streak and has also made 50-of-56 free throws over the team's last eight games (.893). He ranks second in the Big 12 with his .869 season free throw percentage.
The player-of-the-week honor was the second for an OU player this year. Junior guard J.R. Raymond won the award two weeks ago.
The Sooners (19-4 overall and 8-3 in the Big 12) are ranked 14th in the current edition of the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll and play at Oklahoma State Wednesday before hosting Baylor Saturday.
