NORMAN, Okla. - Sheena Werling and Leanne Chen spent their first year at Oklahoma as redshirt volleyball players. They participated in practices and traveled with the team but did not see action.
"We're looking for Sheena and Leanne to make a major contribution to the team next year," said Oklahoma Head Volleyball Coach Kalani Mahi. "They will have an extra year of training to improve their game and get stronger."
Werling, an outside hitter and Tiffin, Ohio, native, was an All-State, all-league and all-district pick her senior year at Calvert High School. She will be a member of the OU track and field team this year, participating in the high jump. Werling placed eighth in the high jump at the 1997 USA Track and Field Nationals.
Chen, a six foot setter from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, was a two-time Regina High School Athletic Association City All-Star team member and was the captain of her team as a senior.
The pair will have four years of volleyball eligibility remaining after this year.
