GOLDEN, Colo. - The Oklahoma wrestling team crowned five champions and en route to the team title at the Colorado Mines Tournament, tonight, in Golden, Colo. The Sooners outdistanced second-place Air Force, 138.5- 125.
OU was paced by the tournaments outstanding wrestler, Jared Frayer, who placed first at 149 pounds and posted two pins. Sooners Matt Ridings (125), Witt Durden (133), Josh Lambrecht (184) and Waymon May (197) also claimed individual championships. Other Sooner place winners include Brad Knecht (fourth, 125), Melvin Lofton (second, 141), Brian Burrows (second, 157), Dustin Walker (third, 174) and Leonce Crump (second, heavyweight). Crump was also earned the most falls, least time award. OU did not send a 165-pound wrestler to the tournament.
"We did a good job, for the most part," said OU Head Coach Jack Spates. "At times, I felt we didn't have the intensity we needed and wanted to earn cheap wins. We can't do that with the schedule we have ahead. We're beat up and have had a long haul the past couple of weeks. We need to take a couple of days to rest and heal. Jared Frayer dominated the tournament, pinning two opponents to earn outstanding wrestler. Matt Ridings, Witt Durden, Josh Lambrecht and Waymon May were also exceptional.
OU returns to action this weekend when it travels to Ames, Iowa, to battle the fourth-ranked Iowa State Cyclones on Friday, February 2. The Sooner return to Oklahoma on Sunday, February 4, to host Oregon State in Marlow and Missouri in Norman. The Oregon State dual begins at 1 p.m. and action begins in the Missouri bout at 7 p.m.
