NORMAN, Okla. - Despite upsetting Brazil, 61-60, in its final preliminary basketball game at The Dome the Canadian National Women's team was eliminated from the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. This win put Canada in a three-way tie for the fourth and final spot in the medal round in Pool A with Brazil and Slovakia - all with a 2-3 record. The top two of the three teams advanced on goal average (points for in games among those teams, divided by points allowed). Brazil finished with a 1.12 goal average, while Slovakia had .969 and Canada .914.
Therefore, Canada will play against Cuba for ninth place on Tuesday, September 26.
Oklahoma's Stacey Dales paced the Canadians with her first double-double of the Games with 16 points and 10 rebounds in 33 minutes of play. She also had two assists and shot 43.8 percent from the field, hitting seven of 16 attempts.
Brazil was set to score a comfortable win against Canada when it led by 15 points 10 minutes into the second half. However, they had not counted on the determination of the Canadian side and with just over four-an-a-half minutes left on the clock the margin had been reduced to four with Canada staging a spirited comeback.
With 1:42 to play and Brazil ahead, 60-57, Brazil missed two free throws and 24 seconds later Dales drove to the basket to reduce the margin to one (60-59). With 51 seconds left, Brazil turned the ball over, allowing Canada to take the ball into its own court where Cal Bouchard was sent to the line. Bouchard converted the two free shots to steal the win.
Dales is averaging 11.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 30.4 minutes per game. She is shooting 45.0 percent (27-of-60) from the field.
