NORMAN, Okla. - The owner of a 58-8 record and a No. 4 national ranking, the University of Oklahoma softball team was selected as one of eight NCAA Championship Regional hosts Sunday night. The Sooners, who will be the No. 1 seed when regional play begins Thursday at the OU Softball Complex, will face sixth-seeded Harvard at 7:30 p.m. on the first day of competition. Regional play will end on Sunday with the winner advancing to the Women's College World Series May 25-29 at Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
The remainder of the six-team regional field will consist of No. 2 seed Oregon State, No. 3 seed Arkansas, No. 4 seed Cal State Northridge and No. 5 seed Northwestern. Oklahoma has faced Oregon State and Arkansas already this season. The Sooners run-ruled Oregon State 9-0 March 16 in the KIA Klassic in Fullerton, Calif., and posted three wins against the Razorbacks (5-3 Feb. 13 in Arlington, Texas, 3-0 and 6-2 Feb. 23 in Norman).
Arkansas will face Cal State Northridge Thursday at 2:30 p.m. to start regional play. Oregon State and Northwestern are scheduled to square off at 5 p.m. and will be followed by OU and Harvard.
This marks the second regional the Sooners have hosted under sixth-year head coach Patty Gasso (also hosted in 1997) and the second time OU has been a No. 1 regional seed under Gasso (also No. 1 in 1998).
