The Sooners
OU ended the 1999-2000 regular season with a 17-4-1 dual record and finished third at the Big 12 Championships. Nine OU wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships. Eight of OU's nine qualifiers are ranked by Amateur Wrestling News and InterMat, five of which are ranked in the top 10, including top-ranked 174-pounder Byron Tucker.
The Big 12 Championships
The fourth-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team scored 65 points to finish in third place at the 2000 Big 12 Tournament at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb., tonight. Oklahoma State won the tournament with 84 points followed by Iowa State with 68. Nebraska (49.5) and Missouri (14.5) placed fourth and fifth, respectively. OU wrestlers Michael Lightner (141) and Byron Tucker (174) claimed individual titles for the Sooners. The championship was Lightner's third Big 12 championship, making him OU's first three-time conference champion since Steve Williams claimed three consecutive titles from 1980-82 and the first Sooner to win three Big 12 Championships. Quantres Bates (125) and David Kjeldgaard were runners-up and three more Sooners, Robbie Waller (165), Tommy Grossman (184) and Brent Boeshans (Hwt), finished third.
Head Coach Jack Spates
Entering his seventh season at the helm of the OU wrestling program, Jack Spates' Sooners are once again among the top teams in the nation.
In the three years prior to Spates arrival at OU, the Sooners' average finish at the NCAA Championships was 23rd. In his first six years, he has guided his squads to four top-10 finishes, including a sixth-place finish at last season's NCAA Championships.
Spates has developed 18 All-Americans while at OU, including four-time All-American and NCAA Champion John Kading at 190 pounds.
Last season, Spates led OU to an 18-5-1 record, one win shy of the school record set in 1974, the year the Sooners last won a national championship. Spates was selected as a coach for the NWCA All-Star Classic this season.
