NORMAN, Okla. - Johnnie Gilbert, a freshman forward on the University of Oklahoma men's basketball team, underwent successful arthroscopic surgery this morning to repair torn cartilage in his left knee, said OU Head Coach Kelvin Sampson. Team doctors said Gilbert will return to action in 10 to 21 days.

A Minneapolis, Minn., native, Gilbert injured his knee in practice Wednesday afternoon. A starter in the team's previous three games, Gilbert is averaging 2.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 16.5 minutes per contest. He was the Minneapolis Player of the Year last season when he led Patrick Henry High School to a 29-1 record and a No. 22 final national ranking.

In other injury related news, junior post player Jozsef Szendrei (pronounced YO-zhef ZEND-ray) will see his first action as a Sooner in Saturday's game versus North Texas, according to Sampson. Szendrei, who has been rehabilitating his right knee following surgery last summer to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament, averaged 15.3 points and 14.8 rebounds last year at Northeastern (Colo.) Junior College. From Budapest, Hungary, Szendrei was a first-team all-region selection last season.

Oklahoma (5-1) hosts North Texas (1-5) Saturday at 7 p.m. at Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners are ranked 20th in this week's AP poll and 16th in the latest ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll.
