NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma 141-pounder Michael Lightner won his weight class and six other Sooners finished in the top three at the Missouri Open at Columbia, Mo., Sunday. OU's Jared Frayer finished as the runner-up at 149 pounds and Bo Maynes (125), Witt Durden (133), Robbie Waller (165) and Waymon May (197) all placed third in their respective weight classes.
Lightner used an first-round pin and major decision victories in the quarter- and semifinals to reach the championship match, where he decisioned Wisconsin's Grant Hoerr, 5-3. The four wins moved Lightner into fifth in career victories at Oklahoma with 115. Frayer pinned his first four opponents of the tournament to advance to the finals before falling to top-ranked Adam Tirapelle of Illinois, 5-3. With the four pins Frayer now has 21 for his career, the 11th best total in school history.
Maynes defeated teammate Matt Ridings, 3-2, for third at 125 pounds and Durden scored three major decisions en route to a third-place finish at 133. Waller won two matches by major decision before finishing third at 165 and May powered his way to a third-place finish at 197 with a pin and major decision. Ridings, Michael Barger (174), Josh Lambrecht (184) and Leonce Crump (heavyweight) finished fourth.
Oklahoma returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 21, when it hosts Neosho Community College and Central Oklahoma in its first duals of the season. The Neosho dual will be held at Norman North High School at noon and the UCO match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the OU Field House.
