Norman, Okla. - The 14th-ranked University of Oklahoma women's basketball team defeated the Australian Institute of Sport, 62-49, Friday night in front of 1,343 fans at the Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners closed out their exhibition season with a 2-0 record. Australia dropped to 2-5 on its United States tour.
For the second-consecutive game, junior guard Stacey Dales led all scorers with 20 points. The All-Big 12 preseason pick also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists. Sophomore forward Caton Hill grabbed game-high 13 rebounds and sophomore guard Jadrea Seeley continued her strong play off the bench with 12 points.
Australia was led by Jessica Mahoney's 14 points and Hollie Grima added 10 points.
Unlike the first exhibition game against Oklahoma Christian, the Sooners found themselves in a much closer contest. Oklahoma's lead was only four points, 46-42, at the 9:23 mark of the second half before OU started pulling away. A 12-2 Sooner run over the next seven and half minutes of play iced the victory for OU.
Oklahoma started the game slow as the Sooners were only able to muster 10 points in the first eight minutes of action. Dales recorded six of the team's first 16 points beforing ending the half with 10 points. Seeley recorded eight of her 12 points before being forced to watch from the bench with three fouls in the opening 20 minutes.
Oklahoma dominated the boards as the Sooners claimed 42 rebounds to the opponent's 26. OU also limited Australia to 37.5 percent shooting for the game while forcing 19 turnovers. The Sooners also held Australia to a season-low 49 points.
Oklahoma opens the regular season in one week at the annual Bertha Teague Classic in Tulsa, Okla. Featured in the tournament is state schools Tulsa, Oral Roberts, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. The Sooners will face Tulsa on Friday, Nov. 10, at 5 p.m. in the Mabee Center on the ORU campus. Oklahoma will challenge host ORU in the final game of the classic on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m.
