Norman, Okla.- The University of Oklahoma volleyball team was defeated Saturday by Wyoming, 3-0, in the Sooner Invitational at the OU Field House in Norman. The Sooners finished the tournament with a 2-1 record and fell to 4-2 on the year. The Cowgirls won the Sooner Invitational with a 3-0 record and improved to 5-3 overall.
The Cowgirls, who recorded a .377 hitting percentage, were led by Melody Friehauf's 18 kills and .593 hitting percentage. Angel Whalen provided the defensive effort for Wyoming with 10 kills. The Sooners hit for .284 clip in the match and were led by Maria Holmgren's 16 kills and .519 hitting percentage.
"We didn't compete tonight," OU Head Coach Miles Pabst said. "This is by far the worst we have played this year. We were a little tired, but the little things killed us today. If we had competed in the match, we would have won. We didn't attack the ball."
Oklahoma opened the day with a 13-15, 15-4, 15-6, 15-2 victory over Wichita State. The win marked the second time this season that OU defeated the Shockers as four Sooners posted double-digits in kills. For the fourth-straight match, sophomore Danielle Bookout led OU in kills. Bookout posted 13 kills en route to a career-high .440 hitting percentage.
The final match of the tournament featured Arkansas-Little Rock and Wichita State, with the Shockers garnering their first victory of the season, 15-9, 7-15, 15-11, 15-7. UALR (2-5) finished the tournament with a 0-3 record, while Wichita State ended with a 1-2 record. In the first match of the day, Wyoming had to fight back from a 0-2 deficit and play five games before putting away the Trojans, 11-9, 9-15, 16-14, 15-9, 17-15.
