NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma Wrestling team defeated Central Oklahoma, 35-6, in their season opener in front of 620 fans tonight at the OU Field House. The Sooners claimed victories in eight weight classes, including the last six.

The match began at 165 pounds when OU's Robbie Waller defeated Jody Marple, 3-0. Sooner Byron Tucker collected 12-first period near fall points on his way to a 16-0 tech fall over Cody Thompson at 174 pounds. UCO won the next two matches by decision, Mahammed Lawal's 10-7 win over Rowdy Lundegreen at 184 pounds and 197 pound T.J. Tallent downed Jeff Henning, 6-1.

OU followed with victories in the last six bouts. Heavyweight Brent Boeshans collected the first of two Sooner falls by pinning Bryan Wilson in 3:38. Quantres Bates decisioned Mark Dodgen, 7-4, in the 125-pound match. Witt Durden needed just 37 seconds to pin Weston Moore at 133. The Sooners collected major decisions in their last three matches. Michael Lightner downed Joe Schneider, 18-7, at 141 pounds, Jared Frayer won by a score of 16-2 over Gable Sullivan at 149 pounds and 157-pound David Kjeldgaard collected a 20-7 victory against Nathan Gomez.

"Overall I'd say a B+, maybe a B performance," said head coach Jack Spates. "I thought that Central Oklahoma wrestled hard and that we wrestled sluggish. I think that we picked it up in the second half. We had some great performances. We'll be a lot better next week."

Oklahoma will be back in action this Saturday when they compete in the Oklahoma Open at the OU Field House.
