NORMAN, Okla. - The Universtity of Oklahoma wrestling team took a major stride towards its goal of winning a national championship by signing Wes Roberts of Moore, Okla., and Matt Grice of Harrah, Okla., to national letters of intent today. Both Roberts and Grice are considered two of the top prospects in the nation.
Roberts, ranked No. 1 in the nation, will be seeking his third straight state title after finishing third as a freshman. He won the Cadet World Team Trials and placed sixth in the world in 1998. This past summer Roberts placed second in the Junior National Wrestling Championships. He has compiled an 88-6 high school record and is projected at 174 pounds for the Sooners.
One of the top two prospects in Oklahoma this season, Grice is a three-time state champion who will be seeking to become only the 13th four-time Oklahoma state champion. Grice has amassed a record of 103-3 over the past three seasons, including a string of 90 straight wins. In the last two years, opponents have managed just two takedowns against him. Grice is projected at 149 or 157 pounds for OU.
"This is a huge step for our program," said OU Head Coach Jack Spates. "Both Wes Roberts and Matt Grice chose OU over Oklahoma State and numerous other programs. Along with their tremendous talent, both Wes and Matt demonstrate a great work ethic. Matt is a tremendously physical competitor who has dominated competition at all levels from 2A to 5A. Wes is a brilliant technician whose national and international success give creedence to his Olympic aspirations. He is also a 4.0 student. In addition to being great athletes, both are outstanding people who are winners off, as well as on, the mat. These young men will play an important role in bringing the national championship back to OU and we are excited to welcome them to the Sooner wrestling family."
