A thirty-two-year veteran of the Sooner staff, Greg Tipton was promoted to Executive Associate Athletics Director for Internal Operations, Facilities & Events in August 2021. Prior to that, he served as Assistant Athletics Director from 2007-2011, Associate Athletics Director from 2011-2015 and Senior Associate Athletics Director-Internal Operations from 2015-2021. In his current role, Tipton is responsible for the unit oversight of OU’s Internal Operations departments consisting of 35 full-time employees and 4 graduate assistants. Those departments include Capital Project Planning, Athletics Facility Maintenance, Event & Game Operations, Athletics Equipment Operations, Event & Game Operations, Athletics Equipment, Athletics Grounds and serves as the primary sport administrator for OU Baseball and Football.
A native of Fairland, Oklahoma, Tipton began his affiliation with the department in 1991 as a football student equipment manager. He became the assistant equipment manager for football in 1995 and then took over as the football equipment manager in 1996. Tipton was promoted again in 2000 to Director of Athletics Equipment overseeing department purchasing and execution of footwear, apparel and equipment agreements.
Tipton was instrumental in the implementation of a web-based inventory control system for accountability of all OU’s athletics equipment, apparel and footwear. He was a key member of the university negotiating teams that secured multi-year, multi-million-dollar apparel and footwear agreements in 2003, 2008, 2014 and most recently in 2017 with Jordan and Nike Incorporated.
Having been a part of 26 bowl games in his career, Tipton serves as one of the lead coordinators for OU’s bowl games and is responsible for overseeing hotel accommodations, bowl operational & travel planning and distribution for all championship awards and gifts. Greg currently serves on the Rose Bowl Game Advisory Group and the College Football Playoff National Championship Advisory Group.
In his role of administrative oversight of the Lloyd Noble Center, he, and his staff vastly improved LNC marketing of the venue for outside events such as concerts and conferences. The enhanced marketing initiatives have proven successful with newly created revenue streams for the OU Athletics Department.
Tipton has played a key role in overseeing or assisting in the project management of over $300 million in OU Athletics capital improvement projects including the 2009 football operations/locker room renovations, McCasland Field House renovation, men’s and women’s basketball locker room renovations, women’s basketball office renovation, L. Dale Mitchell Baseball Park Phase I and Phase II, baseball/softball field replacement projects and most recently as a member of the project leadership team for the $160 million GFOMS south end zone project. He is currently active in the coordination of all capital project management teams including the GFOMS master plan, OU football standalone, L. Dale Mitchell Baseball Park, Love’s Field, Vierson Gymnastics Center and Lloyd Noble Center in conjunction with OU athletics project teams, architects, and OU A&E Services.
Greg is a member of the Varsity O Association and of the Gamma-Kappa chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity at OU where he serves as assistant chapter advisor overseeing recruitment and operations. Tipton holds a bachelor’s degree from OU in Secondary English Education (1995), a master’s degree in Human Relations (1998) also from OU and is a former Adjunct Instructor in the Michel F. Price College of Business at the University of Oklahoma.
Greg is the proud father of his son, Parker who graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2023 and currently serves as a graduate student in Sports Management at the University of Arkansas, and daughter, Rachel who is working toward her undergraduate degree/pre-med at the University of Oklahoma.
