TULSA, Okla. – The No. 10 Oklahoma men's tennis team swept Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa on Wednesday evening. The bottom half of the Sooners' lineup showed up big for the team, claiming each of the three singles points.
The Sooners started off strong by taking the doubles point to head into singles with a one-point advantage. Wins on courts two and three offset the loss at the one line. Junior duo Hank Trondson and Asahi Harazaki won 7-5 at the three spot, followed by a tiebreak victory from senior Luis Alvarez and sophomore Alejandro Melero at the two line to take the doubles point.
Oklahoma got off to a strong start in singles with a win from No. 92 Harazaki at the four line, 6-2, 6-1. Trondson and No. 107 Johan Rodriguez took quick leads in the first sets before dropping second sets to send their matches into third sets.
Melero pushed the Sooners closer to the finish line with a 6-4, 7-6(1) quickly followed by a three-set clincher by Trondson at the six line.
The matches at the one, two and three lines went unfinished with Oklahoma in the lead on two of the three courts.
The Sooners return to the Headington Family Tennis Center to take on a four-match weekend. The stretch begins with a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 6, against Wichita State at 1 p.m. followed by Oral Roberts at 5 p.m. The remaining matches pick up on Saturday, Feb. 7, with the Sooners facing New Mexico at noon and UT Arlington at 4 p.m.
