NORMAN – The No. 10 Oklahoma men's tennis team improves to 6-1 on the season after posting two wins against Wichita State and Oral Roberts on Friday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The Sooners dropped the doubles point in the first match of the day, heading into singles with a disadvantage. The lone OU pair to win in doubles was the pairing of senior Luis Alvarez and sophomore Alejandro Melero on court two.
All but one Sooner started slow in singles. No. 92 Asahi Harazaki took a first-set lead while Melero dropped his first set. Soon after, No. 107 Johan Rodriguez, No. 72 Oscar Lacides and junior Hank Trondson won first-set tiebreaks to go ahead in their matches. No. 74 Alvarez also won his first set, 6-4.
Oklahoma came out swinging in second sets. Harazaki only dropped one game in his second set and won the match, 6-3, 6-1, to tie the dual. The junior's win was followed by wins at the one and six spots from Alvarez and Trondson, each only dropping one game in second sets.
The clinching point came from Melero's win on court five. The Spain native came back from a 1-6 deficit in the first set and claimed set two. The battle continued in the third set as the two went back and forth winning games. Melero finally pulled ahead 5-3 and sealed the comeback win, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.
OU debuted three new doubles pairings to begin the match which proved to be successful. On court one, seniors Bruno Nhavene and Luis Alvarez took the first win, 6-1. The win at the primary spot was quickly followed by court two's win where Trondson and Melero teamed up to post a 6-2 result. Harazaki and freshman Luka Talan Lopatic were ahead 5-3 on the third court when the match was abandoned.
Oklahoma's momentum carried over into singles where first sets rolled in on both sides of the lineup. Melero was first off the court, giving OU its second point of the match. He was quickly followed by Trondson on court four. Both Melero and Trondson went 2-0 on the day.
The Sooners were one point away when Talan Lopatic took advantage of his opportunity and closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-2 result.
OU faces another home doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 7 against New Mexico at noon and UT Arlington at 4 p.m. CT. Oklahoma then begins conference play with a home match against South Carolina on Saturday, Feb. 21 at noon.
