NORMAN — On a night in which Oklahoma honored its 2015-16 Final Four team and raised a No. 24 banner of Buddy Hield to the Lloyd Noble Center ceiling, the Sooners cut a nine-point deficit to one with less than a minute left but couldn't get over the hump in a 75-71 loss to Texas A&M.
The Sooners shot 32.8% from the field — their second-lowest figure of the season — and made just 25.0% of their shot attempts in the second half in falling to 13-14 on the year and 3-11 in SEC play. The Aggies shot 43.5% for the game and outscored OU 32-12 in the paint to improve to 19-8 and 9-5.
For the first time this season, sophomore
Dayton Forsythe led Oklahoma in scoring and assists. The guard came off the bench to register 14 points and a game-high six handouts — one shy of his career high — in his season-high 29 minutes. He was 4 for 10 from the floor, 2 for 6 from 3-point range and made all four of his free throw attempts.
Super senior
Mohamed Wague turned in one of his best games of the season with 12 points, a game-high 13 rebounds and two blocked shots. His fourth double-double as a Sooner resulted in his most points in 15 contests and his most rebounds in 13 outings. The center was 3 for 6 from the field and 6 for 8 from the line.
OU's other double-digit scorers were
Derrion Reid (11 points and five rebounds) and
Xzayvier Brown (10 points and two assists). Starters
Nijel Pack and
Tae Davis were scoreless in the first half and finished with six and four points, respectively, on a combined 3-for-17 shooting.
The Aggies scored the first eight points of the game before the Sooners tied the game at 19, 21 and 24. A&M, which shot 47.1% in the first half and made seven of its 14 3-point attempts, led 43-41 at intermission.
Pack's first basket of the game was a 3-pointer with 18:00 remaining in the second half that gave OU its first lead at 44-43. But A&M countered with a 3-pointer just 10 seconds later to trigger a 7-0 run and never trailed again.
The Aggies pushed their advantage to 70-61 with 6:16 to go. That's when the Sooners made a final push with a 10-2 run behind six points from Forsythe to make it a 72-71 game with 26 seconds left. After a pair of A&M free throws a second later, Forsythe missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with 11 seconds to go, the Aggies got the rebound and clinched the game with a free throw with two seconds on the clock.
OU posted a 44-39 rebounding advantage and pulled down 18 offensive boards — its most in SEC play — to A&M's 14. The Sooners also posted a 21-14 advantage in second-chance points.
The 2015-16 Sooners, coached by Lon Kruger, were recognized on the court during a pregame ceremony, and Hield became the sixth OU player to have his jersey number honored and raised to the Lloyd Noble Center rafters. The 2015-16 consensus national player of the year joined Wayman Tisdale (23), Alvan Adams (33), Mookie Blaylock (10), Stacey King (33) and Blake Griffin (23). Hield, a 10th-year NBA player from Freeport, Bahamas, finished his career as the Big 12 Conference's all-time leading scorer and ranks second in OU history with 2,291 points. He averaged 25.0 points as a senior in 2015-16 and earned the Wooden Award and Naismith and Oscar Robertson trophies.
OU stays home to host Auburn (14-12, 5-8 SEC) on Tuesday at 8 p.m. CT.
