No. 17 Sooners Fall to No. 12 UCF in ITA Kickoff Weekend Championship Round

BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 17 Oklahoma men's tennis team came up short against No. 12 UCF in the championship round of ITA Kickoff Weekend, 3-4.
Saturday's loss marks OU's first of the season, following two ranked victories in the first week of the spring season.
Oklahoma took off with a 3-0 lead after winning the doubles point and following it up with two straight-set singles wins from freshman Johan Rodriguez and No. 46 Luis Alvarez. The freshman and No. 2 newcomer remained undefeated, taking his fourth win of the season, 6-1, 6-4. The top-50 senior took the second win for the Sooners, 6-4, 6-2 to extend OU's lead to 3-0 before the remaining singles courts were all claimed by UCF.
The Sooners' No. 57 Oscar Lacides came up short at the one line, 5-7, 4-6, and UCF claimed its first of four consecutive singles points. Sophomore Orel Kimhi stayed even in the first set before dropping it, 4-6, and couldn't keep up in the second set, falling 2-6.
The Sooners relied on courts five and six to propel them to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. No. 74 Asahi Harazaki kept in close competition with his opponent and forced a third set where he ultimately lost, 6-2, 3-6, 5-7.
With the match tied at 3-all, sophomore Alejandro Melero fought to keep the Sooners' chance at advancing alive. He forced a third set but his opponent pulled away with the win, 4-6, 7-5, 4-6.
UP NEXT
The Sooners head to eastern down I-40 to take on Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. CT.
