Women’s Tennis Advances to ITA Kickoff Championship Round

NORMAN – The No. 6 Oklahoma women's tennis team opened ITA Kickoff Weekend with a 4-0 sweep over Memphis Friday, advancing to Sunday's championship dual.

The Sooners will face No. 9 Stanford at 4 p.m. CT, with the winner clinching a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships in Evanston/Champaign, Ill., Feb. 6-9.

OU set the tone against the Tigers in doubles. On court two, Julia Garcia Ruiz and Salakthip Ounmuang continued their strong start to the season with a 6-0 win over Emma Dvorackova and Clemence Thouard. The duo improved to 4-0 together in spring doubles play. Moments later, Laura Brunkel and Gloriana Nahum sealed the doubles point with a 6-1 victory over Alicia Mall and Natalia Koppova on court three.

When play was halted at the top court, Roisin Gilheany and Evialina Laskevich led Memphis' Sofia Mykhailets and Marina Lubsheva, 4-1.

Carrying a 1-0 advantage into singles, Ounmuang extended OU's lead with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lubsheva at the No. 5 spot.

At No. 4, freshman Edda Mamedova continued the streak with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Dvorackova before Nahum sealed the win on court six, defeating Thouard, 6-2, 6-2, to send OU to the championship dual.

The Sooners improved to 5-0 for the second consecutive season and for the third time under head coach Audra Cohen.
