NORMAN – The No. 6 Oklahoma women's tennis team punched its ticket to the ITA National Indoor Championships with a 4-1 victory over No. 9 Stanford on Sunday at Headington Family Tennis Center.
The berth marks the Sooners' fourth appearance at ITA National Indoors, which will be hosted by Illinois and Northwestern from Feb. 6-9.
The Sooners took the early advantage, winning the first match on court three behind a 6-2 showing by Laura Brunkel and Gloriana Nahum over Stanford's Sein Myoung and Emma Sun. The win improved the duo to 3-0 together to start the season. Moments later, Roisin Gilheany and Evialina Laskevich clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory over Caroline Driscoll and Monika Ekstrand at the No. 1 spot. The doubles point marked OU's sixth straight to open the spring.
When play stopped, Julia Garcia Ruiz and Salakthip Ounmuang held a commanding 5-2 lead over Alyssa Ahn and Tianmei Wang on court two.
Taking a 1-0 lead into singles, Nahum extended OU's lead with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set win over Sun at the No. 6 spot. The Cotonou, Benin native now holds a flawless 7-0 combined record through six dual matches.
At No. 3, Chloé Noël kept it going for the Sooners with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over No. 77 Driscoll to earn her first ranked victory of the spring.
Stanford's lone win of the night came on court one, as No. 67 Ekstrand defeated Laskevich, 6-3, 7-5.
Needing one more point to secure the berth, No. 24 Garcia Ruiz came through on court two, defeating No. 18 Alyssa Ahn, 6-3, 6-4, to clinch the match and send OU to National Indoors.
The Sooners will travel to Illinois for the tournament held on Feb. 6-9. The schedule will be released at a later date as regional action wraps up around the country.
OU will make a quick trip to Tulsa to take on the Golden Hurricane on Jan. 31 before heading to the Indoor Championships. First serve is schedule for 12 p.m. CT.
