NORMANĀ ā The No.Ā 6 OklahomaĀ women's tennis teamĀ punched its ticketĀ toĀ the ITA National Indoor Championships with aĀ 4-1Ā victoryĀ overĀ No. 9 StanfordĀ onĀ SundayĀ atĀ Headington Family Tennis Center.
TheĀ berthĀ marks the Sooners' fourth appearanceĀ atĀ ITA National Indoors,Ā which will be hosted by Illinois and Northwestern from Feb. 6-9.
TheĀ SoonersĀ took the early advantage, winning the first match on court three behind a 6-2Ā showingĀ byĀ Laura Brunkel and Gloriana NahumĀ overĀ Stanford'sĀ Sein Myoung and Emma Sun.Ā The win improved the duo to 3-0 together to start the season.Ā Moments later, Roisin Gilheany andĀ Evialina LaskevichĀ clinchedĀ the doubles point with a 6-2Ā victory overĀ Caroline DriscollĀ and Monika Ekstrand at the No. 1 spot.Ā The doubles point marked OU's sixth straight to open the spring.
When play stopped, Julia Garcia Ruiz andĀ Salakthip OunmuangĀ held a commanding 5-2 lead over Alyssa Ahn andĀ TianmeiĀ WangĀ on court two.
TakingĀ a 1-0Ā leadĀ into singles, Nahum extended OU's lead with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set win over Sun at the No. 6 spot. TheĀ Cotonou, Benin nativeĀ now holds a flawless 7-0 combined record throughĀ sixĀ dualĀ matches.
At No.Ā 3,Ā Chloé NoëlĀ kept it going forĀ the SoonersĀ with aĀ 7-5,Ā 6-1Ā victory overĀ No. 77 DriscollĀ to earn her first ranked victory of the spring.
Stanford's lone win of the night came on court one, asĀ No. 67 EkstrandĀ defeatedĀ Laskevich, 6-3, 7-5.
Needing one more point to secure the berth, No. 24 Garcia Ruiz came throughĀ on court two, defeating No. 18 Alyssa Ahn, 6-3, 6-4,Ā to clinch the match and send OU toĀ National Indoors.
The Sooners will travel to IllinoisĀ for the tournament held on Feb. 6-9. The schedule will be released at a later date as regional actionĀ wraps upĀ around the country.
OUĀ willĀ makeĀ a quick trip to Tulsa to take on the Golden Hurricane on Jan. 31 before headingĀ toĀ the Indoor Championships. First serve is schedule for 12 p.m. CT.
