Sooners Roll to Second Straight Doubleheader Sweep

NORMAN – The sixth-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team continued its opening weekend homestand, earning two more victories over Wichita State and Texas State at Headington Family Tennis Center Saturday, Jan. 17.

OU defeated Wichita State, 4-1, and Texas State, 7-0.

OU opened the day in doubles against the Shockers. On court two, Julia Garcia Ruiz and Salakthip Ounmuang started the Sooners off with a 7-5 win over Theodora Chantava and Kristina Kudryavtseva. The doubles point was secured on court three, as Gloriana Nahum and Laura Brunkel handled Palmy Vimuktananda and Anne Knuettel, 6-3, giving OU the early 1-0 advantage.

Entering singles play, Chloé Noël stretched the lead with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Knuettel on court four. At the No. 5 spot, Ounmuang followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Vimuktananda, pushing the score to 3-0.

Wichita State responded on court three, as Chantava posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over Edda Mamedova, before the 24th-ranked Garcia Ruiz downed Ximena Morales in straight set fashion to clinch the match for the Sooners, 4-1.

OU quickly turned around to face Texas State, opening with another dominant doubles showing. On court two, Garcia Ruiz and Ounmuang rolled to a 6-1 win over Tadiwa Mauchi and Chantajah Mills to pick up their second win of the day. The doubles point was clinched when Laura Brunkel and Oyinlomo Quadre secured a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 position.

Singles play began with freshman Evialina Laskevich earning a 6-0, 6-2 win on court one over Ireland Simme, followed shortly by Noël who claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Mauchi at the No. 5 spot.

Brunkel sealed the match for the Sooners on court five, defeating Olivia Collins, 6-4, 6-2.

The remaining courts finished play, as Quadre, Nahum and Mamedova added wins to complete the 7-0 shutout.

UP NEXT

The Sooners return home next weekend to host ITA Kickoff Weekend, beginning with a matchup against Memphis on Jan. 23.
