NORMAN – With four players in double-digit figures Saturday afternoon, the Oklahoma volleyball team defeated Cal Poly, 3-1, inside Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Sooners (4-1) looked on pace for a sweep, going up 2-0 in the match. Cal Poly (3-3) responded with a third set victory before OU closed things out in the fourth to take the match 25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20.
Alexis Shelton led all players with 14 kills, while
Kamille Gibson added a season high 12.
Emoni Bush and
Kelli Jo Burgess each chipped in 10, with Burgess recording no errors on a .588 clip.
Dionii Fraga tallied 10 digs with
Harper Hall adding eight and
Alexis Shelton chipping in seven.
Kenadie Patterson led the defense with six blocks, Bush added five blocks and
Tekoa Barnes recorded four.
Avaya Maga set a career high with 27 assists on the night to go with a pair of service aces and five digs. Hall chipped in a season high 20 assists and was just shy of a double-double with eight digs.
OU claimed a 14-8 lead at the first timeout of the opening frame, with Burgess notching a quick three kills early. Cal Poly pulled within three at 18-15 to force an OU timeout and the Sooners responded with two quick points to take a five-point lead. OU utilized a 5-2 run at the end to take the set, 25-19.
OU took a 2-0 lead in the match behind a 25-22 victory in the second set. Both teams hit over .400 with 15 kills apiece in a tightly contested set. Cal Poly took a 4-1 lead before a 6-2 Sooner run had OU in front 7-6. The rest of the set was a back-and-forth battle with 10 ties and five lead changes before either team established a true lead. With the set tied at 18-18, OU used a 4-1 run to pull ahead. The Sooners would not relinquish the lead taking the set 25-22 on a kill from Shelton.
The third set was again a tight contest with 10 ties through the first 30 points. After seeing the set tied 12 times, Cal Poly took a 19-17 lead to force an OU timeout. Out of the break, OU capitalized on an error and a block to tie it up once again. Cal Poly had set point at 24-22 but Patterson crushed her third kill of the match to keep OU alive. Looking to fight off set point, an attack error gave the Mustangs the third set, 25-23.
OU jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the fourth, forcing an early Mustang timeout. Cal Poly rallied to take a 13-12 lead on a 6-1 run. Three consecutive kills from Shelton tied the match at 17-all and Barnes fifth of the game gave OU its first lead since 12-11. After a Cal Poly timeout, the teams traded service errors to keep OU with a two-point advantage. OU capitalized on multiple Mustang errors and a 4-0 run to take the set, 25-20.
The Sooners return to the friendly confines of McCasland Field House for a three-game homestand, beginning with a Sept. 10 matchup against Florida State.
