NORMAN – In an epic five-set thriller, the Oklahoma volleyball team took down Florida State, 3-2, Wednesday night inside McCasland Field House.
After going up 2-0 in the match, the Sooners found themselves headed to a fifth set with the Seminoles. OU finished off a back-and-forth battle to take the match 25-15, 25-23, 15-25, 8-25, 15-13.
"The main message after the fourth set was to get back to being us," head coach
Aaron Mansfield said. "We really lost ourselves for a very long period of time there, which we haven't done yet this season, so I think everyone was at a loss. We found a way to win the fifth set somehow so that's the silver lining, but we have a lot of work to do to find some sort of consistency."
Alexis Shelton notched the first 20-kill performance of the year for OU with 23 kills.
Emoni Bush had the first double-double of the season for the Sooners with 13 kills and 12 digs. KJ Burgess added nine kills, while also leading the way with five blocks on the night.
"Lex has been reliable ever since she's been in an OU jersey, so I think it gives our setters a lot of confidence to know that they can set her when it matters," Mansfield said. "She had a lot of really good plays for us tonight and will for the rest of the season."
Avaya Maga recorded a career-high 31 assists to go with seven digs, while
Harper Hall added 20 assists.
Dionii Fraga chipped in 14 digs, while six Sooners recorded at least two blocks each.
A balanced attack was the name of the game in the first set as the Sooners tallied 6.5 blocks and 13 kills in the opening frame. OU raced out to a 15-9 lead at the media timeout, hitting .538 with eight kills early in the set. The Sooners kept their foot on the gas, extending the lead to 10 at 21-12. Florida State fought off a trio of set points, but the sixth block of the set gave OU the 25-16 win.
The second set started similar to the first with the Sooners ahead 15-9 early. Bush and Shelton traded back-to-back kills to force a Seminole timeout at 20-14. Florida State pulled within four at 20-16, but a challenge won by the Sooners extended the lead to 22-17. FSU fought off four match points to force an OU timeout with the Sooners up two. With the lead down to one, Shelton's 12
th kill of the night secured the 25-23 victory.
Florida State led 15-10 in the third after taking an early seven-point lead. The Sooners led in kills through the first 25 points, but eight attack errors allowed the Seminoles the early advantage. A 4-0 scoring run had the Sooners within three, and the Seminoles responded by pushing the lead back to five. FSU closed the set on an 8-1 run to take the third 25-15.
The Seminoles used an 8-0 run to take an 11-1 lead in the fourth, ultimately taking the set 25-8.
At the switch, OU led 8-6 behind four quick kills from Shelton. FSU tied the match at 9-all, but Shelton was there once again to give OU back the lead. The teams traded points from 9-9 to 12-12 before a kill from Bush and ace from
Whitney Wallace had OU at match point. A service error kept the Seminoles alive before an FSU error gave OU the 15-13 victory for the match.
