No. 2 Softball Takes on Shockers for the Second Time This Season

NORMAN  — No. 2 Oklahoma Softball (29-1) plays its penultimate midweek road game when the Sooners go to Wichita State (16-15) Wednesday, March 26. The Sooners and Shockers previously met at Love's Field in February, with the Sooners winning, 8-1.

HOW TO FOLLOW
Tomorrow's game will be streamed on ESPN+ and a radio broadcast will be available on the Franchise 2 (1560 AM and 103.3FM).  Live stats will be available via Statbroadcast.com.

LAST TIME OUT 
OU scored five unanswered runs and Sam Landry fanned nine in seven innings of work as the Sooners defeated Missouri, 5-1, to claim the series Sunday, March 23 in Columbia, Mo.

LAST TIME VS. SHOCKERS
Sam Landry fanned 10 batters in 5.2 innings and Isabela Emerling homered and doubled as the Sooners defeated Wichita State, 8-1, Feb. 23 at Love's Field. OU scored three runs in the first inning and collected seven hits in the win. 

AGAINST WICHITA STATE
Oklahoma is 56-7 all-time against the Shockers and 14-3 in Wichita. The Sooners defeated the Shockers, 7-0, a year ago in Wichita. The first ever meeting was an 11-0 win for OU in March of 1975.

ABOUT WICHITA STATE
Wichita State is 16-15 and 4-5 in conference play … the Shockers were swept in the league opener at FAU before taking the series against both North Texas and UTSA … four different Shockers have five home runs … Camryn Compton paces the team with 23 RBIs … four different Wichita State pitchers have earned at least three wins … Chloe Barber leads the team with 50 strikeouts.

SHE DOES IT AGAIN
Pitcher Sam Landry made it consecutive SEC Pitcher of the Week honors March 25, reaching three for the season. Landry earned complete game wins in both of her appearances at Missouri, spinning a five-inning shutout Friday and a seven-inning complete game Sunday to clinch the series. Landry ranks fifth in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (11.71), third in WHIP (0.71) and tenth in ERA (1.04). 

GOING, GOING, GABBIE!
Freshman infielder Gabbie Garcia became the first player to reach ten home runs after hitting a first inning three-run home run at Missouri. Her team best 16-game hitting streak came to a close last weekend in Columbia, Mo. Between March 1 and March 9 she homered in five consecutive games, making her the first OU freshman since Jocelyn Alo to homer in five straight. March 11 she was named D1Softball

Freshman of the Week as well as Southeastern Conference (SEC) Freshman of the Week, becoming the first OU freshman to earn the honor in OU's young history in the SEC. Garcia homered at Tulsa March 12 and hit two out of the park in a 10-7 comeback win at No. 15/12 Arkansas Sunday. March 18 she was honored as SEC Player of the Week.

DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK
Oklahoma currently has 11 comeback victories this season and is one of 13 teams in the nation to have double-digit comeback victories. The Sooners came back in multiple games against South Carolina and Arkansas, as well as once against Missouri.

CYDNEY SLAMDERS
Cydney Sanders reached 200 games played at Arkansas, 143 of which have come at Oklahoma. Her 51 career home runs also ranks sixth among all active DI softball players and her 140 walks are fourth-most among active DI players. 

ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS
The Sooners have a number of players in the top ten among active leaders in a variety of statistical categories, particularly between the arms of Isabella Smith and Sam Landry
STARS OF THE WEEK
Kasidi Pickering was named one of Softball America's Stars of the Week March 4.  The outfielder homered four times, driving in 12. Nelly McEnroe-Marinas joined her with the same honor March 11 after hitting a pair of three-run home runs in a 10-9 win against No. 10 South Carolina Sunday, March 9. Righty pitcher Sam Landry joined them both with the same honor March 18 after going 2-0 with two saves, 15 strikeouts and a 0.47 ERA over four appearances. 

PATIENT AT THE PLATE               
Of the Sooners' 250 runs, Oklahoma has scored 77 runs via a walk or hit-by-pitch. Oklahoma has scored at least one run per game via a walk or hit by pitch in 27 of 30 games. The Sooners are first in the nation in walks with 169. 

FULLY STAFFED
The OU pitching staff has been balanced from the jump this season. All five Sooners that have logged innings have turned in a sub-2.76 ERA. Four pitchers have tallied at least 30 innings in the circle, while the staff has combined to strike out 194 batters and only walk 43. Kierston Deal, Sam Landry, Audrey Lowry and Isabella Smith all have at least five wins.

NEW BATS, SAME RESULTS
Of Oklahoma's 60 home runs, 34 have been hit by an OU newcomer or a Sooner in their first season on the field. Additionally, six different Sooners have had a two-homer performance this season (Gabbie Garcia, Kasidi Pickering, Nelly McEnroe-Marinas, Sydney Barker and Isabela Emerling and Ella Parker).

WOAH NELLY!
Nelly McEnroe-Marinas has started off SEC play on fire, hitting seven home runs through the first nine games. She hit one in each game at Missouri and launched two more at Arkansas, including a go-ahead three-run homer in Sunday's finale.  In SEC-opening weekend she hit two three-run home runs in the same game to help defeat South Carolina, 10-9, March 9. She is the first Sooner to hit a pair of three-run homers in the same game since Lynnsie Elam did so against Iowa March 20, 2022.
