Sooners Defeat Shockers, 19-16, Oklahoma Pounds Out 17 Hits

WICHITA, Kan. — No. 2 Oklahoma Softball (30-1) scored eight times in the first inning and six different Sooners tallied multi-run games as OUĀ slugged itsĀ way to a 19-16 win at Wichita State (16-16) Wednesday, March 26.

Oklahoma never trailed despite a resilient effort from the Shockers, with Sam Landry improving to 10-0 through a win in relief. Kasidi Pickering drew four walks and crossed home three times, while Gabbie Garcia drove in a team high four runs. Maya Bland got the start in right and set a career high with three hits to go along with two runs and two RBIs.

Garcia, Isabela Emerling and Pickering all homered for an Oklahoma offense that posted a season best 17 hits to go along with the season high 19 runs.Ā

Emerling reached 100 career RBI with a two-RBI effort Wednesday. Abigale Dayton, Nelly McEnroe-Marinas and Garcia all scored a trio of runs.

The Sooners batted around in the first inning, scoring eight runs on six hits to set a season high for most runs scored in an inning. Highlighting the offensive outburst was a two-RBI single from Bland and two-run triple off the bat of Dayton.Ā

Wichita State responded with two solo home runs in the first, but the Sooners got both of those runs back with two in the top of the second inning thanks to Garcia's two-run homer to left. The roundtrippers kept coming for Oklahoma in the third as Emerling hit a solo homer to right and Pickering launched a two-run homer to the opposite field. McEnroe-Marinas drove in another with a triple to push OU's lead to 14-3 through two and a half innings.Ā

The Shockers answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning, using a pair of home runs to make it 14-9. One hit, an error and a pair of walks allowed Wichita State to get within two, but Landry held WSU at bay from there as the Sooners scored the rest of their runs with a five-run fifth.Ā The inning got going with a Dayton infield single followed by a McEnroe-Marinas RBI double. Garcia laced a single off Wichita State pitcher Chloe Barber, before she threw it up the first base line to allow two more to score. Ella Parker added an RBI single and another throwing error on a chopper up the middle made it, 19-12, OU.Ā

WSU's Taylor Sedlacek hit a three-run home run to help the Shockers make another push, but a scoreless seventh helped OU secure the win.
