CANÓVANAS, Puerto Rico – Oklahoma climbed one spot on the leaderboard to secure a fifth-place finish at the Puerto Rico Classic on Wednesday. The Sooners have now placed inside the top five at every event this season and in 10 of their last 13 tournaments dating back to last year.
A pair of Sooners (5, -26) finished inside the top 20, with
Ryder Cowan claiming ninth and
Drew Goodman earning a share of 16th. All five Sooners in the lineup finished the week under par, as Oklahoma has now posted red numbers in 14 of its 18 rounds this season, including five straight dating back to the fall.
Oklahoma entered the final round in sixth place, nine shots behind eventual champion Purdue at the par-72 Grand Reserve Golf Club, but couldn't close the gap over the final 18 holes. The Sooners played the front nine 1-under par before rallying on the back to leapfrog Georgia and secure a top-five finish on the team leaderboard.
Cowan (T9, -9) fired rounds of 67-72-68 for a 207, marking his sixth career top-10 finish in 17 events. The sophomore has now recorded five top-20 finishes in six tournaments this season and hasn't posted an over-par round in his last eight rounds played.
Goodman (T16, -6) signed for rounds of 68-70-72 to finish tied for 16th in Canóvanas, securing his fourth top-20 finish of the season. The Ben Hogan Award watch list honoree opened the fall with three consecutive top-10s and now boasts 28 top-20 finishes in 43 career events.
Jase Summy (T22, -5) surged on the final day, carding a 3-under 69 to move into a tie for 22nd. The Keller, Texas, product is a combined 18-under par over his last two events.
Matthew Troutman and
PJ Maybank III tied for 40th at 1-under.
Stephen Campbell Jr. (T36, -2) finished as the low unattached player after firing a 3-under 69 in the final round to crack the top 40.
Jaxon Dowell, also competing unattached, tied for 40th, while
Cameron Cheek made his collegiate debut and finished T68.
The Sooners return to action March 2-4 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas, where they'll look to defend their 2024 title against one of the toughest fields in college golf.
