NORMAN — University of Oklahoma head men's basketball coach
Porter Moser announced Sunday the signing of
Kirill Elatontsev, a center from Russia who is immediately eligible.
Elatontsev, whose full name is pronounced kee-REEL EE-el-uh-tahn-suv, stands 6-11, weighs 240 pounds and has one semester of eligibility remaining. He most recently played for Lokomotiv Kuban in the VTB United League, which is regarded as the top tier of Russian professional club basketball. He joined the Lokomotiv Kuban Academy in 2016 and stayed in its system until this year, advancing through multiple levels. In February 2024 he earned a call-up to the Russian National Team.
From Krasnoyarsk, Russia, which is the second-largest city in Siberia, Elatontsev averaged 7.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 20.2 minutes per game for Lokomotiv Kuban during the 2024-25 season and was named VTB United League Best Young Player for the second consecutive year.
The 23-year-old Elatontsev turned in his best statistical season in 2022-23 with Lokomotiv Kuban-2 when he averaged 14.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game.
"First and foremost, we're happy Kirill is here, as it's been a process to get to this point," said Moser. "He gives us depth at the five spot, which is key since the SEC is one of the best rebounding leagues in the country. He's older and has played against really good competition, which will also help us in league play. And he's skilled and has a really nice touch around the basket. We're excited for his addition and are working to get him acclimated to our program, our system and our terminology so he can help us as much and as quickly as possible."
Elatontsev is a two-time VTB United Youth League gold medalist (2022, 2023) and two-time silver medalist (2020-21). He was named 2021 VTB United Youth League regular season MVP and 2023 Final Four MVP. He was also a 2025 all-star selection.
Elatontsev is expected to play in Monday's 7 p.m. home game vs. Mississippi Valley State. The Sooners begin SEC play by hosting Ole Miss on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
