NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams are set for the NCAA Midwest Regional hosted by Oklahoma State at the Greiner Family Cross Country Course in Stillwater, Okla., on Friday.
The Sooner women will run a 6K at 9 a.m. CT, followed by the men in a 10K at 10 a.m. CT. Seven runners for both the men's and women's teams will race Friday morning.
OU's men enter the competition ranked 21st nationally per USTFCCA, their highest ranking since 2016, and No. 4 in the Midwest region. Other nationally ranked teams competing include No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Iowa State and No. 20 Tulsa.
The Sooners raced at the SEC Cross Country Championships on Oct. 31, where the men finished third and freshman
Evans Biwott finish fourth, the highest placement for an individual Sooner since 1996. A trio of Sooners earned All-SEC honors including Biwott,
Shadrack Kiptoo and
Ronald Ngetich.
The OU men's and women's squads race for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Columbia, Mo. on Nov. 23. The top-two teams at the regional automatically qualify, while the rest of the qualifiers are announced at the selection show Saturday, Nov. 15. The NCAA DI Cross Country Subcommittee will choose 14 at-large teams to fill out the 32-team field, then individuals are selected based on the first four finishers who do not belong to an automatic qualifier or an at-large team. All four finishers have to finish in the top 25 within their region. Altogether, 36 individuals automatically qualify and two are chosen at-large, making 38 the grand total. The two at-large selections are the highest placing individuals at a regional that were not automatic qualifiers.
