NORMAN — Lucious Selmon, the oldest of the three famed Selmon brothers who starred at Oklahoma on the defensive line in the 1970s, was announced Wednesday as a member of the SEC's 2025 Football Legends class, a group of former football standouts who will be honored at events surrounding the SEC Football Championship Game in Atlanta in December.
Selmon, who attended OU from 1970-73 and played during the 1971-73 seasons, was a unanimous first-team All-American as a senior in 1973. He was named the Big Eight Defensive Player of the Year and Chevrolet/ABC Defensive Player of the Year and finished seventh in Heisman Trophy voting that same season. He also earned second-team All-America honors in 1972 and was a first-team All-Big Eight honoree in his final two seasons.
The three Oklahoma teams on which Selmon played combined for a 32-2-1 record (.929) and earned three top-three final AP rankings: No. 2 in 1971 (11-1) and 1972 (11-1), and No. 3 in 1973 (10-0-1). He helped the Sooners win the 1972 and '73 Big Eight Championships, as well as Sugar Bowls in the 1971 and '72 seasons.
The 74-year-old Selmon, who is from Eufaula, Okla., started 31 of his 35 games and finished his career tied for first in program history in tackles by a defensive lineman (255) and tackles for loss by a defensive lineman (31). He was inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
A 1974 graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a degree in special education, Selmon was selected by the New England Patriots in that year's NFL Draft. He served as an OU assistant coach for 19 years from 1976-94, helping lead the Sooners to nine Big Eight titles and the 1985 national championship. He also served as an assistant coach for the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars for eight years from 1995-2002, aiding the team in making four straight playoff appearances (1996-99).
Selmon's younger brothers Dewey and Lee Roy were also All-America defensive linemen for the Sooners, and all three started games together during the 1973 season. The brothers' contributions to the OU football program are represented with a statue on campus, just northeast of Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
The 2025 SEC Football Legends class will be honored at the 2025 SEC Football "Weekend of Champions" Dec. 5-6 in Atlanta, highlighted by the annual SEC Legends Celebration presented by T-Mobile on Friday, Dec. 5 at the College Football Hall of Fame. The group will also be recognized prior to the SEC Football Championship Game, which will be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 6.
