COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – The Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a three-set match to No. 10 Texas A&M, 26-24, 25-21, 25-20, Friday night inside Reed Arena.
OU (12-5, 4-3 SEC) suffered its first three-set loss of the season to the top 10 Aggies (14-3, 6-1) and their second in a row in SEC play.
Alexis Shelton led all players with 13 kills on the night, while
Emoni Bush chipped in eight and
Kelli Jo Burgess added five.
Burgess and
Kamille Gibson led the defense with four blocks apiece.
Dionii Fraga tallied nine digs, while
Avaya Maga notched 25 assists.
The Aggies took set one, 26-24. A&M led 15-14 at the media timeout, but Burgess quickly tied the match again on her second kill of the set. An ace from Gibson gave OU its first lead at 18-17 and the Sooners were the first to 20 with a one-point lead. A&M responded with two consecutive points to move back in front 21-20 before the Sooners took a 23-22 lead to force an Aggie timeout. OU had set point at 24-23, but a 3-0 Aggie run clinched the set.
A&M took the second set to move in front 2-0. Oklahoma took an early timeout after the Aggies used a 5-1 run to jump out to a 12-7 lead. OU used a 4-1 run, including a solo block from
Kamille Gibson to pull with three at 17-14. A&M took a 23-18 lead late before securing the set, 25-21.
OU dropped the third set, 25-20. A&M raced out to a 19-11 lead, putting the match seemingly out of reach. The Sooners pulled back within four at 22-18 on a 4-0 run, but couldn't overcome the deficit.
The Sooners return to action on Sunday at No. 2 Texas. The match is set for a 7:30 p.m. start on ESPN.
