NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team downed South Carolina, 3-1, Friday night inside McCasland Field House.
The Sooners (12-3, 4-1 SEC) tallied a season-high 16.5 blocks in the win, taking down the Gamecocks (6-9, 0-5 SEC) 25-23, 25-19, 16-25, 25-19.
Alexis Shelton powered the offense with 17 kills on a .314 clip while chipping in six digs and four blocks. Fellow outside Tekoa Barnes tallied seven kills, including the game-winner, two aces, and three blocks.
Kelli Jo Burgess set a career high with nine blocks, including three solo, to go with nine kills on a .643 clip. Emoni Bush tied her career high with six blocks and added six digs.
OU hit .414 in the first set to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Sooners controlled the first half of the set, leading 15-13 at the media timeout. South Carolina took their first lead of the match at 18-17 on a 3-0 run. The signature triple block by the Sooners tied the match at 18-all and Burgess gave OU the lead back with a solo block. With OU leading 22-20, the Gamecocks used a 3-1 run to tie the match and force a timeout. A kill from Gibson gave OU set point and a block form Bush and Patterson sealed the 25-23 win.
The Sooners took set two, 25-19, to go up 2-0 in the match. South Carolina took a 12-10 lead but a 4-0 run by OU, capped off by back-to-back blocks from Shelton and Patterson, put OU ahead 14-12. OU would never relinquish its lead, pulling ahead 19-15 on a 3-0 run. South Carolina pulled within three at 21-18 and the Sooners used a 4-1 run to take the set.
South Carolina took the third set, 25-16. Tied at 6-all, South Carolina used a 4-0 run to go up 10-6 and force a Sooner timeout. Out of the break, back-to-back solo blocks from Burgess had the Sooners down 10-9 before another Gamecocks run put them ahead 14-9. OU pulled within two at 16-14, but a 10-2 run by South Carolina closed out the set.
OU took set four 25-19. The Sooners won a crucial challenge, giving them a 10-8 lead instead of the score being tied 9-9. After the challenge, OU went up 17-9 to force a South Carolina timeout. With OU in front 20-12, the Gamecocks fought back to pull within six at 22-16. A service error gave OU set point and Barnes got the kill to win the match.
OU will host Georgia on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT inside McCasland Field House before embarking on a three-game road swing.
