Sooners Earn Top-15 Win in Friday Night Thriller

NORMAN - The Oklahoma men's tennis team had a strong start to their weekend, taking down No. 14 San Diego in a Friday night thriller inside Headington Family Tennis Center.

The Sooners battled the Toreros for the doubles point with fifth-year senior duo Alex Martinez and Baptiste Anselmo taking a swift win at the one line, 6-1. Courts two and three remained tightly matched, with junior Jordan Hasson and sophomore Luis Alvarez dropping their match in an extended set, 5-7. The doubles point came down to the match at the two position as fifth-year senior Mark Mandlik and senior Nathan Han sent their match into a set tiebreak. The duo dropped the match, 6-7, 6-8 and the Toreros claimed the doubles point.

All six Sooners took wins in the first sets to set Oklahoma up for a dominant singles competition.

Mandlik tied the match at one point all, taking a quick 6-1, 6-3 win at the six line. Following wins in their first sets, Hasson, Alvarez, Martinez, fifth-year senior Justin Schlageter and freshman Kholo Montsi dropped their second sets to send their matches into third sets.

Hasson came away with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win on court two to give the Sooners the lead over the Toreros. Schlageter extended the lead for the Sooners after taking a win in a three-set match, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 at the five position.

The Toreros claimed a singles point after Alvarez dropped a three-set battle on court four, 6-3, 5-7, 2-6.

On court one, No. 54 Martinez battled back after dropping the second set to clinch the match for the Sooners in a thrilling tiebreak to determine the match. Martinez won the match, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(4) over San Diego's No. 5 Oliver Tarvet. The victory marks Martinez's second top-20 win in the last two matches after he defeated Cornell's No. 17 Radu Papoe.
