Sooners Top UCF in Orlando

March 15, 2024 | Women's Tennis

ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 21 Oklahoma women's tennis team picked up their second win of the season over UCF on Friday evening, battling past the Knights, 4-3, at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.

Oklahoma (8-4, 3-1 Big 12) fended off a late comeback attempt to secure their first road victory of the season. Against the Knights, the Sooners won the doubles point for the sixth straight match to take the early 1-0 lead.

Chloe Noel and Ava Catanzarite opened play on court three, shutting out Donatella Guarnieri and Anya Ambarish, 6-0, to remain perfect as a duo on the season (4-0). The No. 63 doubles pairing of Julia Garcia Ruiz and Zdena Safarova clinched the doubles point for OU with their 6-3 win over Sophia Biolay and Jantje Tilbuerger of UCF at the No. 2 position.

When play was halted on the top court, OU's No. 22 Roisin Gilheany and Dana Guzman trailed UCF's Anique Kattenberg and Noel Saidenova, 4-5.

Emma Staker won OU's first singles point on court No. 6 after not dropping a set to UCF's Guarnieri, 6-3, 6-1.

Guzman, ranked No. 42, extended the Sooner lead by defeating Olivia Lincer, 6-1, 6-2 on the top court.

Trailing 3-0, Biolay started the rally for the Knights, knocking off OU's No. 72 Alina Shcherbinina, 6-1, 6-2.

Following closely behind on court four, Tilbuerger picked up a win over Noel, 6-2, 7-5, before Kattenberg defeated Catanzarite 6-4, 6-3, on court five to tie the match score at three.

All eyes shifted to court two as No. 33 Garcia Ruiz squared off against Saidenova to determine the match winner. In a high-pressured battle, Garcia Ruiz came out on top in three sets by defeating Saidenova 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, to clinch the win for the Sooners. The sophomore from Mexico improved her season dual record to 10-0 with the victory.
