March 10, 2024 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN – The No. 20 Oklahoma women's tennis team picked up their second win of the weekend on Sunday afternoon, battling past West Virginia, 6-1, at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

Oklahoma (7-4, 2-1 Big 12) dropped just one singles match all weekend. Against the Mountaineers, the Sooners won the doubles point for the fifth straight match to take the early 1-0 lead.

Chloe Noel and Ava Catanzarite opened play on court three, defeating Ting-Pei Chang and Tatiana Lipatova 6-3. The No. 63 doubles pairing of Julia Garcia Ruiz and Zdena Safarova clinched the doubles point for OU with their 6-3 win over Love-Star Alexis and Maja Dodik of West Virginia at the No. 2 position.

The top court played through and saw OU's No.22 Roisin Gilheany and Dana Guzman top Michaela Kucharova and Momoko Nagato, 6-2.

In singles, the Sooners won five courts to secure the win over the Mountaineers.

No. 33 Garcia Ruiz won OU's first singles point on the top court after not dropping a set to WVU's Alexis, 6-3, 6-1.

Guzman, ranked No. 42, matched Garcia Ruiz on court two by defeating Maya Bordereau, 6-3, 6-1.

Noel clinched the win for OU with the Sooners' fourth dual point Sunday, ending her singles match in straight sets over Nagato 7-6 (4), 6-1. Catanzarite defeated Dodik of West Virginia 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot.

Adding to the team score for OU was Emma Staker, who played her second match of the weekend on court five. The junior from Tulsa defeated Chang 6-4, 6-3.

The Mountaineers lone victory came at the No. 6 spot, where Lipatova got WVU on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Safarova.
