Sooners Take Down Cornell Sunday in Norman

NORMAN - The Oklahoma men's tennis team made a strong return to Norman, taking down Cornell, 4-3.

"We've had two weeks off now and it's given us a lot of time to come back and work on things we needed to get better at," said head coach Nick Crowell. "I thought we did a lot of those things today and our guys responded really well."

The Sooners debuted two new doubles pairings for the day, matching fifth-year seniors Alex Martinez and Baptiste Anselmo at the one line and fifth-year senior Mark Mandlik and freshman Kholo Montsi at the two line. Cornell took the first doubles win on court two, 7-5, but the Sooners immediately won the match on court one to bring it all down to court three. Junior Jordan Hasson and sophomore Luis Alvarez took the match into a set tiebreak but dropped the match, 6-7(5) to give Cornell the doubles point.

Four Sooners took leads in singles, with Hasson, Montsi, Alvarez and Justin Schlageter each starting strong.

Mandlik tied the match at one-all, taking a dominant 6-4, 6-1 win at the six line. The Sooners took the lead after Martinez took down No. 17 Radu Papoe on court one, 7-6(5), 6-1.

Schlageter extended the lead for the Sooners after winning a first-set tiebreak and taking the second set, 7-6(4), 6-1. On court three, Montsi took both sets to seven games. He clinched the match for the Sooners against Petar Teodorovic, 7-5, 7-5

Following four consecutive singles wins, Alvarez and Hasson were the last matches still in play. Alvarez dropped his match in a 5-7, 2-6 loss. Hasson pushed his match to a third set after splitting his first two sets, ultimately dropping his match, 6-3, 3-6, 3-6, to Adit Sinha.

UP NEXT

The Sooners remain on their home courts for a matchup against No. 15 San Diego on Friday, March 8 at 6 p.m. for the second Friday Night Lights match of the season.
