Women's Tennis Upends No. 5 NC State for Second Straight Ranked Win

NORMAN - The Oklahoma women's tennis team recorded its second-straight ranked victory with a 4-2 win over No. 5 North Carolina State on Sunday afternoon at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

The Sooners (5-3) kicked off the match in doubles against the Wolfpack (8-3). Finishing first, Chloe Noel and Ava Catanzarite picked up a 6-3 win against Gabriella Broadfoot and Abigail Rencheli on court three. Picking up their second doubles win of the weekend on court one, the duo of Dana Guzman and Roisin Gilheany topped No. 13 Amelia Rajecki and Maddy Zampardo 6-4 to clinch the doubles point for OU.

When play was halted, the No. 52 doubles pair of Julia Garcia Ruiz and Zdena Safarova held a 5-2 lead over No. 9 Anna Zyryanova and Sophie Abrams.

Going into singles with the 1-0 advantage, No. 93 Garcia Ruiz met No. 30 Rencheli and notched her second-straight ranked win, claiming a 6-3, 6-2 victory. The Mexico native dropped just one set on the weekend while competing at the second court.

The Wolfpack would battle back, earning the next two wins to even up the score. On court three, No. 98 Catanzarite dropped her match to No. 27 Zyryanova 4-6, 6-7(3). Gilheany battled hard in an effort to force a third set, but ultimately fell to Zampardo 2-6, 6-7(3) on court five.

To break the tie, Emma Staker earned a hard fought 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win over Broadfoot on court six. The junior from Tulsa, Okla., improved her individual season record to 3-1.

Following closely behind on court four, Noel squared off against No. 44 Abrams and delivered a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory to clinch the match for the Sooners. Sunday marked the first career individual ranked win for the freshman from France.

When play was halted, No. 38 Guzman was heading to a third set with No. 3 Rajecki on the top court after a 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) start.

UP NEXT

The Sooners will hit the road for the first time this season as they open up Big 12 Conference play on Sunday, March 3 at No. 4 Texas. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. CT.
