No. 1 Oklahoma Headed to Arizona State for Tri-Meet

February 01, 2024 | Women's Gymnastics

NORMAN – The No. 1 ranked Oklahoma women's gymnastics team will head back West for a tri-meet against No. 23 Arizona State and No. 2 California on Friday, Feb. 2, at 8 p.m. The meet will be held inside Desert Financial Arena and air on Pac-12 Insider.

Friday's meet marks the second time this season the Sooners will face the No. 2 team in the country. OU previously defeated then-No. 2 Utah at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad on Jan. 13.  This will also be the first of two matchups against Cal as the Sooners and Golden Bears will meet at the Metroplex Challenge later this month.

THE MORE YOU KNOW

ROAD WARRIORS
The 2024 Sooners will be tested early and often away from the friendly confines of Lloyd Noble Center. After starting the season with three-straight road quad meets, the Sooners returned home on Jan. 26. OU is back on the road against Arizona State for its fourth road meet in five weeks. The Sooners still have plenty of road trips left this season. OU will look to defend its title at the Metroplex Challenge on Feb. 17 against Arkansas, Washington and California. OU will then travel to TWU on March 3 for a tri-meet featuring the Clemson Tigers in their first season of NCAA competition. The regular season wraps up with OU heading to Arkansas for the first time since 2019 on March 10.

GOT IT DONE
In their first dual meet of the season, the Sooners pulled off a come-from-behind victory over No. 12 Denver, 197.775-197.150. Though the final score doesn't show, the Sooners were in a tight battle with the Pioneers through the first three rotations. Trailing 49.325-49.175 after the first rotation, the Sooners used an impressive 49.600 on bars to take a .025 lead they would hold for the next two rotations. On floor, OU used a 49.575 to pull away from the Pioneers and secure the victory with their highest floor score this season. Junior Jordan Bowers won the bars title with a 9.975 and shared the floor title with teammate Faith Torrez after scoring a 9.95 each. Ragan Smith won the beam title for the second week in a row with a near-perfect 9.975. Denver's Jessica Hutchinson won vault with a 9.95 and the all-around with 39.725. Hutchinson also shared the floor title with Bowers and Torrez.

CLOUD 9.9
In four meets, the Sooners have posted 49 scores of 9.9 or higher – an average of 12 per meet and 51% of all routines. In the opening meet of the season, the Sooners tallied 11 marks of 9.9-plus and counted only scores of 9.9 or better on bars. In week two, the Sooners posted 12 scores of 9.9-plus and in week three counted 14. Of that 14, five came on beam meaning OU only counted scores of 9.9 or better on the event. The Sooners lead the nation with 49 scores of 9.9 or higher, followed by California with 42 and LSU with 41. Only the Sooners have tallied double-digit marks of 9.9 or better in every meet this season.

AMAZING AUDREY
Senior Audrey Davis has been one of the most consistent gymnastics to ever wear an OU leotard. Davis has hit 163 of 164 career routines – a .994 percentage – over the last four years. Her lone fall came on balance beam in the 12th routine of her career. Since then, Davis has hit 152 routines in a row, dating all the way back to Feb. 7, 2021. Her consistency not only shows in her ability to hit routines, but on the uneven bars she has never scored lower than a 9.800 and have scored a 9.9 or higher on 38 career routines.

ALL-AROUND EXCELLENCE
When the Sooners took to the floor on Jan. 5, four athletes found themselves competing in the all-around: Jordan Bowers, Audrey Davis, Katherine LeVasseur and Faith Torrez. Bowers, Davis and Torrez all have all-around experience competing all four events and LeVasseur made her collegiate floor debut. All four athletes scored at least a 39.400 in the all-around with Torrez leading the way to claim the AA crown with a 39.625. Bowers was just behind her, recording a 39.600 while Davis and LeVasseur tallied a 39.500 and 39.400, respectively. In week two, the four once again all recorded at least a 39.400 with Davis notching a season-high 39.625, Torrez a 39.600, LeVasseur a career-high 39.525 and Bowers a 39.400. During week three LeVasseur posted a 39.675. meaning all four athletes have now scored at least a 39.600 this season. Currently, all four are ranked in the top 15 in the all-around with Bowers at No. 5, Torrez at No. 12, Davis at No. 13 and LeVasseur at No. 14.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
No. 23 Arizona State: The Sun Devils are currently ranked No. 23 in the nation and are coming off a season high score at Utah in their Pac-12 opener. ASU earned a 196.700 and has scored above 196 in three-straight meets. ASU extended the program record for consecutive meets with a 49-plus on vault, now at 14 in a row dating back to last season. The streak of consecutive bar rotations with a 49-plus is now at 13 in a row. Hannah Scharf's 9.925 on floor tied for the event title, her second floor win of the season and third overall. It also was the highest score on that event this season for the Sun Devils. She also earned the event title in a three-way tie with two other Utah gymnasts.

No. 2 California:  The Cal Bears have been off to a hot start in 2024, coming in at No. 2 in the nation just behind the Sooners. Cal posted an incredible 197.950 over Oregon State to open Pac-12 competition, led by matching 39.700s from eMjae Frazier and Mya Lauzon. Cal registered the second-best beam score in program history with a 49.675 and tied for the third-best mark on the floor exercise at 49.600. Lauzon, who entered the weekend tied for the No. 1 ranking nationally in the all-around, recorded a 9.975 in both the beam and floor, earning a perfect 10 from one judge in each event. It marked the second time this season Lauzon has received a 10 from one judge on two different events. Frazier scored at least a 9.9 in all four rotations, including a 9.950 on the uneven bars.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Sooners will return to Norman for a quad meet featuring Big 12 newcomer BYU, Texas Woman's and Utah State. The meet is slated for Friday, Feb. 9, at 6:45 p.m. CT and will be Eras Night, celebrating Oklahoma gymnastics alumni.
