LOOKING BACK
The Oklahoma volleyball team put up an impressive fight in a 3-2 loss to No. 13 Kentucky Wednesday night inside Historic Memorial Coliseum. Taking on their third ranked opponent in a row, the Sooners took a 2-1 lead in the match after winning the second and third sets. The Wildcats took set four to force a decisive fifth set and clinch the match.
Alexis Shelton and Payton Chamberlain each recorded a double-double for the Sooners. Shelton posted 17 kills to go with 14 digs, while also adding four blocks. Chamberlain tallied 42 assists to go with 11 digs and three kills. The defense was on lock, recording 14 blocks on the night. Kelli Jo Burgess led the way with eight, while also adding six kills. Kari Geissberger chipped in seven blocks, while Kamille Gibson and Lydia Martyn each added four.
WE DIG IT
With 128 digs on the season, libero Callie Kemohah is moving her way up the top five in OU history for career digs. The senior needed just seven digs going into the 2024 season to pass two-time Big 12 Libero of the Year Keyton Kinley for fifth place and now sits at 1,429 to sit in third. Kemohah needs just seven digs to finish second all-time.
MCCASLAND MAGIC
The Sept. 29 win over Tennessee was extra special, for more reasons than one. While also being the first conference victory as members of the SEC, the win marked the first over a ranked opponent since Oct. 25, 2014, when the Sooners took down No. 2 Texas in Austin. The win was also the first over a ranked opponent inside McCasland since Sept. 27, 2014, when the Sooners defeated No. 23 Kansas.
HOME SWEET HOME
For just the second time this season, the Sooners are playing in front of their home crown inside McCasland Field House. OU will host just eight games inside the Field House in 2024, welcoming Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, Missouri, Texas A&M, Texas and Auburn. Missouri, Texas A&M and Texas are all familiar with Norman after years spent in the Big 12 Conference, while Tennessee and Florida made their first trips to Norman this season.
CHAMBERLAIN EARNS SEC HONORS
Payton Chamberlain brought home the first SEC Weekly Honor of the year as she was named the co-setter of the week. The weekly award is the first in her career for Chamberlain. The senior shared the honor with Kentucky's Emma Grome.
In two matches, Chamberlain recorded 93 assists for an average of 10.33 assists per set over the weekend. The Roanoke, Texas, native also added 18 digs, three kills, two service aces and four blocks as OU opened conference play.
Against Florida, Chamberlain recorded her second double-double of the season, notching 41 assists and 10 digs. All four of her blocks game against the Gators as she notched three block assists and one solo block. In the win over Tennessee, Chamberlain tallied a season-high 52 assists, just five shy of her career record. She added two service aces to go with eight digs as she helped OU to its first win over a top-25 team since 2014.
WELCOME TO THE BLOCK PARTY
The Sooners defense has been a force to be reckoned with this season, recording at least eight blocks in 10 matches this season. Against Tulsa on Sept. 13, the Sooners put up an impressive 20.0 blocks, the most by a Sooner squad since tallying 19.0 against Kansas State in 2020. OU has recorded at least 7.0 blocks in every match this year and reached the double-digit mark on five occasions. The Sooners are second in the SEC in blocks per set with 2.76.
