LEXINGTON, Ky.– The Oklahoma volleyball team put up an impressive fight in a 3-2 loss to No. 13 Kentucky Wednesday night inside Historic Memorial Coliseum.
Taking on their third ranked opponent in a row, the Sooners (7-4, 1-2) took a 2-1 lead in the match after winning the second and third sets. The Wildcats (8-6, 2-1) took set four to force a decisive fifth set and clinch the match.
Alexis Shelton and
Payton Chamberlain each recorded a double-double for the Sooners. Shelton posted 17 kills to go with 14 digs, while also adding four blocks. Chamberlain tallied 42 assists to go with 11 digs and three kills.
The defense was on lock, recording 14 blocks on the night.
Kelli Jo Burgess led the way with eight, while also adding six kills.
Kari Geissberger chipped in seven blocks, while
Kamille Gibson and
Lydia Martyn each added four.
Gibson and Martyn also reached double-digits in kills, recording 14 and 11, respectively.
Callie Kemohah notched 14 digs to go with eight assists.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair up to 18-18. The Sooners used a pair of blocks to take the lead at 20-18 before a 5-0 run from the Wildcats made it 23-20. A challenge won by the Sooners made it a two-point game, but Kentucky closed it out to take the set 25-21.
Oklahoma evened things up in the second with a 23-25 win, hitting .414 while holding the Wildcats to just .259. The Sooners doubled their kills from set one with 16 in the second frame. Leading 20-17 late, Kentucky made it interesting by pulling even at 21-21. Kills from Burgess and Shelton put OU back in front before Shelton closed it out with her eighth kill of the match.
Down 7-2, the Sooners used an 8-1 run that included seven blocks to take a 10-8 lead. The Wildcats would keep it close throughout the remainder of the set but the Sooner defense was on lock, not allowing Kentucky to tie the match. Kentucky fought off one set point, but a kill from Shelton secured the 25-23 win.
Kentucky took the fourth set, 25-18. The Sooners were within one at 16-17, but a 5-0 run that included three service aces tied the match at 2-2.
OU battled back from a 7-3 deficit in the fifth set to tie the match at 9-9. With the match tied at 13-all, Kentucky used back-to-back kills from Brooklyn DeLeye to win, 15-13.
The Sooners return home to host Arkansas on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. inside McCasland Field House.
