Sooners Complete Epic Comeback Friday Night

October 18, 2024 | Volleyball

ATHENS, Ga. – For the second time this season the Sooners pulled off an incredible reverse sweep, taking down Georgia, 19-25, 27-29, 25-17, 25-19, 15-11, in an epic five-set battle.

Down 2-0 in the match, the Sooners were lights out in the final three sets to earn their second SEC victory of the season. OU improved to 8-6 on the year and 2-4 in SEC play while Georgia dropped to 8-8, 2-4.

Kamille Gibson led all players with 19 kills on the night, to go with three blocks. Alexis Shelton extended her double-digit kill streak to 19 matches with 11 kills. Shelton also chipped in three assists, nine digs and six blocks, including the game winner.

Payton Chamberlain recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 44 assists and 10 digs, along with two aces and two blocks. Callie Kemohah notched 15 digs to lead the way, while Jasmine Ellison added 12 for a career high.

Lydia Martyn led the defense with nine blocks, one shy of her season high, and Hannah Pfiffner added five to go with a season-high eight kills.

Georgia took the first set, 25-19. After trailing 10-4, the Sooners pulled within two at 12-10 but could not overcome the early deficit.

The second set was a tight battle from the start. OU tied the set at 15-all on a block from Shelton and Martyn and the teams continued to trade points with the Sooners taking the lead at 22-21. With Georgia at set point, Chamberlain kept the Sooners alive with a kill to tie it at 25-25. The teams traded set points up to 27-27 before Georgia took the set, 29-27.

OU took a 7-4 lead behind a 5-0 run with Gibson behind the line serving to open the third set. The Sooners kept their foot on the gas, running out to a 21-12 lead. The Bulldogs strung together a late run but couldn't overcome the deficit as the Sooners won the third frame, 25-17.

Much like set three, the Sooners used a 5-0 run to take a 7-4 lead in the fourth. OU pushed it's lead to seven at 17-10, but the Bulldogs cut it to three late at 21-18. Gibson's 14th kill of the night gave OU set point at 24-18 and the Sooners closed it out with a 25-19 win.

OU won a critical challenge in the final set to make the score 6-3, before forcing a Georgia timeout after a block from Shelton and Pfiffner. At the switch, OU led 8-4 but two quick points from the Bulldogs made it 8-6. The Sooners were the first to 10, leading by three and pushed the lead to four at 13-9. With Georgia yet again closing the gap, a kill from Geissberger and block from Shelton secured the 15-11 victory.

Up next for the Sooners is a Sunday matinee with South Carolina. The two teams will face off at noon CT on SEC Network.
