COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a four-set match to South Carolina, 25-22, 13-25, 17-25, 23-25, Sunday afternoon in Columbia, S.C.
Alexis Shelton led the team with a double-double, notching 14 kills to go with 10 digs.
Kamille Gibson also recorded double-digit kills with 13 at a .333 clip, along with four blocks.
Payton Chamberlain notched her eighth-straight match with 40-plus kills, tallying 41 in the match.
Defensively,
Callie Kemohah led the team with 14 digs, while
Hannah Pfiffner notched a team-high eight blocks.
Kari Geissberger chipped in seven blocks along with seven kills.
OU took the first set, hitting an impressive .536 with 17 kills, including six from Geissberger. South Carolina led at the first timeout, 13-9, but the Sooners came out firing with a 5-1 run to tie the match at 14. The teams traded points to a 21-21 tie before OU used a 4-1 run to close out the set with a 25-22 victory.
The Gamecocks jumped out to a 13-3 lead on an 8-1 scoring run and the Sooners couldn't overcome the early deficit, dropping the set 25-13. In the third, South Carolina led 15-10 at the media timeout and held on to that lead to win the set 25-17.
The fourth set saw the Sooners take an early advantage, leading 15-13 at the media timeout. The Sooners stayed in front until an overturned call tied the match at 21-all. South Carolina took the lead at 22-21, but OU responded immediately responded with a
Lydia Martyn kill to tie it at 22-all. South Carolina would eventually take the set, 25-23.
The Sooners return home to the friendly confines of McCasland Field House for a pair of matches. OU will face Alabama on Wednesday, Oct. 23, before hosting Missouri on Sunday, Oct. 27.
