Men's Golf Posts Wire-to-Wire Win at Hogan Collegiate

October 01, 2024 | Men's Golf

FORT WORTH – For the second time in as many weeks, Oklahoma men's golf found themselves in the winner's circle, fending off 11 top-25 teams to claim victory at the Ben Hogan Collegiate at Colonial Country Club on Tuesday.

The eighth-ranked Sooners (1, -10) were the only team to finish under par in the final round, posting a 279 (-1) to win by four strokes at the par-70, 7,289-yard course, home to the PGA Tour's Charles Schwab Challenge. OU's wire-to-wire triumph marks the ninth time head coach Ryan Hybl has led the Sooners to back-to-back victories.

"Just a really phenomenal week from the guys," Hybl said. "For us to go wire-to-wire against the best field in college golf is really incredible. Our guys were really solid from top to bottom, I thought, this week. I'm seeing a ton of growth from our guys in terms of our maturity and how we approach the game, which is all I can ask for her."

Off to one of the best starts in program history, the Sooners have faced 41 teams in three events this season, including 21 in the top 25 and 11 in the top 10. In those head-to-head matchups, Hybl's squad boasts an impressive 38-2-1 record, and is 5-0 vs. the three teams they lost to or tied with since the season opener. Hybl now has 47 career wins as Oklahoma's head coach, extending his school record. In his 16th season, he ranks fourth in career wins among active Division I coaches.

"Back-to-back wins is great," Hybl continued. "We're on the good side of momentum, and when you're there you just want to keep the pedal on the floor and that's what our goal is as we keep this thing going."

OU's victory was powered by four Sooners finishing inside the top 15, with three placing in the top eight. All five members of the Oklahoma lineup finished in the top 30, and each player contributed at least one counting score during the week.

Drew Goodman (T3, -5) posted his third straight top-10 finish, shooting a 67 (-3) on Tuesday to tie for third at 5-under for the week. The senior preseason All-American helped the Sooners maintain their lead with a bogey-free, 4-under 31 on the front nine, before carding one bogey and eight pars on the back. The Norman product now boasts 38 rounds in the 60s and 16 top-10 finishes in 41 collegiate events.

"Drew continues to lead us," Hybl added. "His expectations are to play high-level, elite golf, and when he does that our team is really good. He's been at that level since he got back from the summer and it's really good to see him playing like this."

Sophomore Ryder Cowan (6, -2) secured his first top-10 finish of the season with rounds of 71-67-70, finishing 2-under and in solo sixth place. His birdie putt on the final hole clinched both his top-10 finish and Oklahoma's victory.

Matthew Troutman (T8, E) earned a career-best tie for eighth, improving on his T10 finish at the 2022 Men's NIT. Despite a final-round 73 (+3), his two rounds in the 60s on Monday secured his best event as a Sooner.

PJ Maybank III (T14, +2) tied for 14th, matching the best finish of his career when in the lineup, after posting a 74 on Tuesday.

Jase Summy (T28, +5) delivered a critical 69 (-1) in the final round, jumping 19 spots on the leaderboard and contributing a counting score that sealed the Sooners' victory.

For the second straight week, Oklahoma led the field with 55 birdies - six more than any other team. The Sooners dominated par-4 scoring and ranked second on par-5s. No. 11 Texas (-6) claimed the runner-up spot, while top-ranked Auburn (-4) finished third. No. 16 North Carolina (+1) and No. 2 Arizona State (+11) rounded out the top five. North Carolina's David Ford (-9) won the individual title by three strokes, earning an exemption into the PGA Tour's 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge.

The Sooners now return from their Lone Star State swing to prepare for the Stephens Cup, set for Oct. 21-23 at Oklahoma City Country Club. This prestigious, six-team tournament will be aired nationally on the Golf Channel, and tickets are on sale now.
