OU has five regular season home meets in 2023 and will also host the Big 12 Championships. After tonight, the Sooners will host a quad meet with BYU, TWU and Utah State (Feb. 9), Big 12 rival West Virginia (Feb. 23), 2021 NCAA Champion Michigan (March 1, ESPN2) and future SEC foe Alabama (March 17, ESPN2). The Big 12 Championship will be on ESPNU on March 23.
DOMINANT IN DENVER
For the third straight week, the Sooners put up the nation's highest score of the season — this time a 198.325 — to win a quad meet Sunday afternoon at Magness Arena. The Sooners, who improved to 9-0 on the year, beat host and No. 10 Denver (197.175), No. 11 UCLA (196.550) and Stanford (196.100). For the third time in three competitions this season, OU's
Jordan Bowers,
Audrey Davis,
Katherine LeVasseur and
Faith Torrez each competed in the all-around. Bowers was sensational, scoring at least a 9.925 on all four events and winning with a career-high 39.775. She was followed by LeVasseur in second place (career-high 39.675), Torrez in third place (career-high-tying 39.625) and Davis in fifth (39.550).
The Sooners started the meet on floor and notched a season-high 49.550. Oklahoma extended its advantage in the second rotation, posting another season high with a 49.600 on vault behind three consecutive 9.950 scores from freshman
Hannah Scheible and LeVasseur and Bowers. OU pulled away from the competition with a stellar performance on balance beam in the final rotation, posting a season-high 49.725 to seal the victory by more than a full point.
TO 198 AND BEYOND
Oklahoma has totaled 64 scores of 198 or better in program history, including 56 scores since 2016. Of those 64 scores, only 24 have been earned at home, with 40 coming at road or neutral site competitions. Twenty of those scores have come in regional or national competitions, including a 198.3875 at the 2023 NCAA Championship which tied for the highest NCAA Finals score in history. In 2023, the Sooners earned a new program-best with a 198.575 against West Virginia on Feb. 24, 2023. Also in 2023, the Sooners recorded an NCAA record 10 scores of 198-plus, which they accomplished in 2018 and 2022. This season, the Sooners are one of just three teams (Ball State, LSU) to reach the 198 mark.
CLOUD 9.9
In three meets, the Sooners have posted 37 scores of 9.9 or higher – an average of 12 per meet and 51% of all routines. In the opening meet of the season, the Sooners tallied 11 marks of 9.9-plus and counted only scores of 9.9 or better on bars. In week two, the Sooners posted 12 scores of 9.9-plus and in week three counted 14. Of that 14, five came on beam meaning OU only counted scores of 9.9 or better on the event.
VAULTING TO THE TOP
Freshman
Hannah Scheible has had an explosive start to her Sooner career. Currently, the Kimball, Mich., native is ranked No. 4 in the nation on the event. She is the highest ranked freshman on the apparatus and highest ranked Big 12 athlete. A vault specialist to start the season, she has earned three scores of 9.9 or better through the first three meets. In week one, she posted a 9.9, followed by a 9.925 in week two. Last week, she performed her best vault of the year for a career-high 9.95 and earned her second-straight Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award.
SOONER DUO RECOGNIZED BY BIG 12
Junior
Jordan Bowers and freshman
Hannah Scheible were named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week and Event Specialist of the week, respectively, the conference announced Tuesday. This is the second weekly honor for Scheible and the 11th career honor for Davis.
Bowers and Scheible were instrumental in leading the Sooners to their first 198-plus score of the season with a 198.325 at the Denver Quad, featuring Denver, UCLA and Stanford. All five scores earned by the pair counted in OU's victory. The pair shared the event title on vault with matching scores of 9.95 and Bowers won the all-around, floor and bars titles as well. The duo helped lead the Sooners to season highs on both vault and beam. With matching 9.95s on vault, the pair led OU to a 49.600 on the event, the only school to go 49.6-plus on vault this season. On beam, Bowers 9.925 led the Sooners to the fourth-highest score in program history with a 49.725.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
A week after hosting the Sooners in their home arena, the Pioneers will travel to Norman for a Big 12 clash. Denver is currently ranked No. 12 in the week three rankings after increasing its season average by a full tenth following a 197.175 performance on Sunday. Overall. The Pioneers are ranked No. 7 on bars, No. 11 on beam, No. 15 on vault and No. 23 on floor. Jessica Hutchinson continues to lead the team, coming in at No. 13 in the all-around with a 39.542 average. Rylie Mundell is the highest ranked Pioneer in ninth on bars (9.917).
