Sooners Sweep Sunday Doubleheader

NORMAN - The Oklahoma men's tennis team swept UT Arlington and Illinois State on Sunday in a pair of home matches.

"We had goals we wanted to accomplish this weekend and we were able to do that," head coach Nick Crowell said. "Everyone came out with unbelievable attitudes and passion, all of our core values that we really try to build our program on."

OU sweeps UTA

The Sooners scored the doubles point with wins courts one and three. Baptiste Anselmo and Justin Schlageter defeated UTA's Andres Medus and Meethre Barot, 6-0. Alex Martinez and Kholo Montsi came away with a 6-1 win on court one against Solano Caffarena and Pedro Sasso to win the doubles point for the Sooners.

Martinez and Jordan Hasson gained quick leads, with Hasson going up 5-0 on court two and Martinez going up 4-0 on court one.

Mandlik completed his first set with a 6-2 win and gained a 5-0 lead before taking the first singles win, 6-2, 6-2 against Medus.

Hasson took the first set on court two, 6-1 and was down 3-5 in the second set before play was stalled.

Luis Alvarez won his first set, 6-1 on court four and came away with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Sasso.

Asahi Harazaki won his first set on court six, 6-4 and was down 1-2 before play was stalled. Martinez's match against Caffarena was also halted. The score was 6-1, 2-3.

Singles play concluded with a win on court three for Schlageter after he took a win in the first set, 6-3 and gained a 5-0 lead in the second set before securing the match against Dante Teramo, 6-3, 6-0.

OU drops Illinois State

Martinez and Montsi gained a 3-0 lead against Emiliano Gonzalez and Tin Ostro to start off doubles competition. Hasson and Alvarez took the first win in doubles on court three against Caden Scarlett and Tomas Valencia, 6-2. Martinez and Montsi were quick to follow with a 6-3 win to claim the doubles point for the Sooners.

Mandlik and Han each gained quick 3-0 leads to start off singles play. Mandlik was first to complete a set, winning 6-2 and defeating Gonzalez, 6-2, 6-1 after getting another lead of 5-0 in the second set. Han claimed the first set against Valencia, 6-2 and completed his match with a win, 6-2, 6-3.

Hasson went up 4-0 to start on court one and went on to take the set, 6-0. He defeated Hjalte, 6-0, 6-3.

Alvarez took a 5-1 lead in the first set on court four and claimed the first set, 6-1. He went on to defeat Ostro, 6-1, 6-0 after setting himself up with a significant lead in the second set.

Montsi fell behind in the first set but turned it around at 4-3 to take the lead and win the set against Adrian Dibildox, 6-4. He gained a 4-0 lead in the second set and was up 5-1 when play was stalled due to an injury for Dibildox.

Trondson and Scarlett battled it out on court six, with Trondson taking the first set, 7-5.

UP NEXT

The Sooners travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to face Washington in the opening round of ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday, Jan. 27, followed by either Tennessee or USF.
