Women's Tennis Prepped for Two Top-25 Matchups

NORMAN - The No. 13 Oklahoma women's tennis teamĀ is set to continue their non-conference home slateĀ with two top-25 battles this weekend at the Headington Family Tennis Center. OU will host No. 14 Ohio State on Friday before returning on Sunday to host No. 5 MichiganĀ for the squad's first ranked matchups of the season.

LAST TIME OUT

The Sooners opened their season against Wichita State andĀ Wyoming on Friday,Ā pickingĀ up consecutive 6-1 winsĀ to advance to 2-0 for the season.

In the first match against Wichita State, freshman Chloé Noël and sophomore Julia Garcia RuizĀ were credited for the clinched doubles point after taking down Kristina Kudryavtsev and Jessica AnzoĀ , 6-3, on court three. Again on court three, sophomore Romana CisovskaĀ and freshmanĀ Roisin GilheanyĀ secured the doubles point against Wyoming byĀ shutting outĀ Lucia Malinak and Serina AbriolaĀ 6-0.

On the singles courts, OU won nine of 12 matches throughout the day. Junior Alina ShcherbininaĀ clinchedĀ the victory for the Sooners against the ShockersĀ with a 6-2, 6-3Ā win at the top court over Xin Tong Wang. Senior Dana Guzman, who clinched six matches for Oklahoma as a junior,Ā picked up her first of the season against the Cowgirls. Guzman swiftly defeatedĀ Noesjka Brink 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot.Ā 

TRACKING OHIO STATE

The BuckeyesĀ currently have twoĀ players in the ITA singles rankings. Leading the pack is No. 15Ā Irina Cantos, withĀ No. 85 Luciana Perry following behind.Ā 

In doubles, the squad has the No. 17Ā pair in the nation of CantosĀ and Sydni Ratliff.

SCOUTING MICHIGAN

The WolverinesĀ also have their fair share in the polls. Their highest-ranked player is No. 10Ā KariĀ Miller, with supporting players: No. 39Ā Julia Fliegner, No. 47 Lily Jones and No. 94 Gala Mesochoritou.Ā 

No. 8Ā Miller and Jaedan BrownĀ highlight the team in the doubles rankings.

Oklahoma will play as a host of ITA Kickoff Weekend as they welcome UCF, CaliforniaĀ and IllinoisĀ for the Jan. 27-28Ā weekend. They will play their first match against UCFĀ on Saturday, Jan. 27.
