Sooners Drop Battle to No. 14 Ohio State

NORMAN - In the most attended indoor women's tennis match at the Headington Family Tennis Center, No. 13 Oklahoma fell to No. 14 Ohio State 4-3 on Friday.

The Sooners (2-1) kicked off the match in doubles against the Buckeyes (1-0). Finishing first, Romana and Alina Shcherbinina defeated Madeline Atway and Teah Chavez 6-3 on court five. Following right behind, Chloé Noël and Julia Garcia Ruiz slid past Irina Cantos Siemers and Audrey Spencer at court three with the 6-3 win to clinch the doubles point for OU.

When play was halted, the No. 2 ranked doubles pair of Dana Guzman and Alina Shcherbinina were tied at 4-4 with Sydni Ratliff and Luciana Perry.

Going into singles with the 1-0 advantage, Garcia Ruiz met Shelly Bereznyak and delivered a quick 6-2, 6-2 win for the Sooners to extend their lead. No. 37 ranked Guzman joined Garcia Ruiz in the win column at the No. 4 spot of the lineup to defeat Chavez 7-5, 6-0.

The Buckeyes went on to win the final four singles matches, starting with No. 15 Cantos Siemers defeating No. 72 Shcherbinina 6-2, 6-4.

On court three, Noël dropped her match to Ratliff 6-1, 2-6, 1-6. No. 112 Catanzarite competed in a back-and-forth battle with Spencer, ultimately losing her match on court three 4-6, 6-3, 5-7. All eyes shifted to court two as No. 16 Florencia Urrutia squared off against No. 85 Perry to determine the match winner. In the longest battle of the night, Perry came out on top by defeating Urrita 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 to complete the Buckeye comeback and clinch the win for the visitor's.

The Sooners will be back on Sunday, Jan. 21 to face No. 4 Michigan at 12 p.m. CT at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
