NORMAN – Guided by new head coach Roger Kish and a wrestler ranked in all 10 weight classes, the Oklahoma was tabbed as the No. 13 team in InterMat preseason poll this week.
The preseason ranking of 13th is the program's highest since opening the 2013-14 campaign ranked No. 4 in the nation. Six of Oklahoma's ranked wrestlers are returners from last year's roster, while the remaining four are newcomers brought in by Kish, who was named Oklahoma wrestling's 15th head coach in May.
Transfer Stephen Buchanan is OU's highest-ranked grappler, earning the No. 2 spot at 197 pounds. A two-time All-American at Wyoming, Buchanan claimed the 197-pound title at the 2022 Big 12 Championships and will look to become Oklahoma's first national champion since Cody Brewer in 2015.
Returners Mosha Schwartz, Tate Picklo and Josh Heindselman all find top-15 rankings in their respective weight classes. Schwartz garnered the No. 11 spot at 141 pounds, Picklo is 13th at 174 pounds, and Heindselman is the No. 14-ranked heavyweight in the nation.
Willie McDougald, the 2022 Big 12 runner-up at 149 pounds, is ranked No. 16 as he returns to the mat for the Sooners in 2023-24. Gerrit Nijenhuis, a 2023 NCAA qualifier for the Sooners, will open his season ranked 17th at 165 pounds. Jared Hill, ranked 22nd at 157 pounds, rounds out the ranked returners for OU.
Newcomer Giuseppe Hoose, a transfer from Buffalo, earned the No. 19 spot at 184 pounds, while No. 26 Jace Koelzer (133) and No. 31 Antonio Lorenzo (125) complete Oklahoma's ranked lineup.
As a team, the 13th-ranked Sooners are one of seven Big 12 teams inside the top 30, as OU will look to notch its third top-two finish at the Big 12 Championships in the last four seasons next spring. Oklahoma is one of three Big 12 schools to have 10 wrestlers ranked in the preseason poll, joining No. 3 Missouri and No. 10 Iowa State.
Oklahoma's schedule will be unveiled at a later date.
