On the linebackers … "Our guys are hungry. They may not have seen much game time last year, but they're ready. Then we brought in guys like Dasan McCullough or Konnor Near, who was an All-American and won a couple of national championships at that level (Division II). Those are big pieces for us."
On team depth and physical improvement … "Every rep you take has to be a game rep. Competitive stamina comes from having the right people in at the right time. We're deep now. We brought in a lot of linebackers, and I think that last year we had some young guys that may not have been ready, so the starters had to be in there a little bit longer. But sometimes that just happens, and you've got to be ready for it and be in a better shape. We've gotten better, faster and stronger working with Schmitty (OU Director of Sports Enhancement and Strength and Conditioning Jerry Schmidt). If we look back at where we were a year ago, we're miles ahead of that place."
On linebacker improvement and getting better in the offseason … "There is so much that this defense can learn. All we pretty much do is walkthroughs. I bring the linebackers in every day, and we watch film. We're going to a deeper level that we just couldn't last year. We're able to learn more by ourselves this year and have that mini-coach Venables mindset when we're watching that tape."
On the strength and conditioning program … "It takes time to build a program with Coach Schmidt. I think last summer was kind of him just preparing us for what he wanted. This year is really like our first summer in the program. We're able to do the workouts that he actually wants us to do. But now we're developed and mature enough to where we can take that stress and strain that he puts on us as players."
On his final college football season … "This is my last season, so it means a lot to me personally. It means a lot to everybody as well, after last season. We had very high hopes but didn't get the outcome we wanted. We're really excited going into to this season, especially with fall camp right around the corner."
On his physical growth in the offseason … "From January to now, I've gained like 30 pounds this offseason. I feel faster, more explosive and stronger than I ever have. I'm just way more natural this size than I was on the edge. We've been talking about it, Coach Bates and Coach Chavis, we're talking about watching last year during fall camp, I look way more comfortable inside with my stunts. It's just been a really good transition."
On playing at Oklahoma … "When you play at OU, you always know that you're going to get everyone's best shot and their "game seven" mentality. It's a great feeling to beat someone whenever you know they gave you their best shot. That's what I know I'm looking forward to for this season."
