WACO, Texas —
Rocco Garza-Gongora went 3 for 4 and
Easton Carmichael and
Anthony Mackenzie both homered, but the Oklahoma baseball team dropped the series finale to Baylor 5-3 Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
Braden Carmichael pitched 5.2 scoreless innings in relief, striking out three and keeping Baylor off the board for five straight frames. Carston Atwood came in and got a strikeout to end the eighth inning.
Garza-Gongora lined an RBI single in the second inning,
Easton Carmichael hit his fourth homer of the season in the sixth and Mackenzie hit his fifth homer of the year in the seventh inning. The freshman Carmichael finished 2 for 4 at the plate, and
Kendall Pettis was 2 for 4 with a double and scored in the second inning.
Starter
Will Carsten (1-2) took the loss for the Sooners (17-16, 3-6 Big 12). BU starter Will Rigney (3-1) earned the win for the Bears (12-20, 4-8 Big 12) and Hambleton Oliver got the save.
Oklahoma cut Baylor's lead to 2-1 in the top of the second inning. Pettis singled, stole second and scored on the base hit by Garza-Gongora.
The Bears scored two runs in the first inning on a double by Kolby Branch and a groundout by Hunter Simmons. BU then added three runs in the third on RBI singles by Simmons and Polk and an error that made the score 5-1.
Bryce Madron also finished with a pair of hits, including a double in the third inning, and
John Spikerman singled in the sixth. Oklahoma finished with 12 hits, but left nine on base and committed three errors.
Oklahoma returns home to L. Dale Mitchell Park for four games next week. The Sooners face Wichita State at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and welcome Texas Tech for a three-game series Friday through Sunday.
