WACO, Texas —
Jackson Nicklaus drove in two runs and seven different batters recorded a hit, but the Oklahoma baseball team fell at Baylor 10-6 Thursday on a cold and wet night at Baylor Ballpark.
Rain fell for most of the day in Waco, finally stopping around 7 p.m. The game time was moved around at different points throughout the day in an attempt to avoid the rain, and the teams finally took the field just after 8 p.m.
After a scoreless opening frame, Nicklaus knocked a two-run single as part of a four-run second inning for the Sooners (16-15, 2-5 Big 12). The Bears (11-19, 3-7 Big 12) tied the game with four runs in the fifth and then scored three runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Anthony Mackenzie and
Bryce Madron both doubled and drove in a run, and
Rocco Garza-Gongora accounted for another RBI.
John Spikerman and
Sebastian Orduno also doubled for OU.
Braxton Douthit struck out four and allowed just one hit over his 4.0 innings before turning the game over to the bullpen to start the fifth.
Carter Campbell (3-3) entered in a tie contest with a runner on second and retired the side on three strikeouts. He finished with a career-high four punch outs, but ultimately took the loss in relief. Ethan Calder (2-0) earned the win for Baylor.
Oklahoma scored four runs on three hits and a pair of errors in the second inning. Orduno hit a leadoff double and Carmichael singled, putting runners on the corners. Garza-Gongora hit a short chopper down the first base line, and Orduno slid safely at home past the attempted tag. Nicklaus then hit a two-run single that bounded over the first baseman, scoring Carmichael and Garza-Gongora. Nicklaus moved around to score on an RBI groundout by Mackenzie.
Baylor tied the game in the fifth inning on five straight hits. Kolby Branch hit a three-run triple and scored on a double by Hunter Simmons. The Bears took a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run home run by Cole Tremain and a solo homer by Walker Polk.
Oklahoma cut it to 7-6 with a pair of runs in the eighth inning. Mackenzie and Madron hit consecutive doubles to start the frame, producing a run. Madron then scored when Spikerman's grounder to third was misplayed and bounced into left field.
The Bears extended their lead to 10-6 in the eighth inning on a three-run home run by Hunter Simmons.
Oklahoma did not draw a walk Thursday night, the first time in 160 games no OU batter reached by base on balls. Before Thursday, the last time OU went a full game without drawing a walk was March 1, 2020 against LSU.
The Sooners and Bears continue the series at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
